Ohoopee Dunes WMA to Big Hammock WMA
Temperature was actually in the upper thirties when I got up. I had regular arm warmers and my sunsleeves but no knee warmers. I managed to get my regular arm warmers over my knees and although they didn't want to stay up all the way, they covered my knees till I got too hot.
Today was an even higher percentage of dirt, perhaps 90%. And lots more sand. I only had to walk 2 or 3 times , total of about a mile I'd say. But there were lots of sorta sandy roads that I could ride just fine but they were slow going for sure. All morning I felt kinda bleh. Was wondering what the hell was wrong with me. I chalked it up to fatigue at first but I realized I just probably need to eat a lot more. I had kind of just left without eating much in the morning. So I stopped at a church at around 10 and ate a bunch. Soon after that I felt a good bit better. Tried to be conscious of eating all the time, just whatever, as much as I could stand when I thought about it. That made me feel better as the day went on.
I kind of forgot that I would be traveling right through Vidalia sweet onion country right at harvest time. So as I approached Cobbtown and rode into Tattnall County I saw fully mature fields of onions, and workers gathering them. I rode by fields already picked over and tilled under with still a surprising number of diminutive onions left in the field. I grabbed one bite size one and peeled the outer layer of skin. Ate it just like it was a cherry tomato and it was delicious. Freshest thing I've had since Franklin. Later on in the day I found a normal sized one that had fallen off a truck since it wasn't near a field. Grabbed it and threw it in my bag. Fun fact: to be called a Vidalia sweet onion legally it has to be grown in one of only a handful of counties bordering Toombs county, which contains the town of Vidalia. Supposedly the soil here near the Altamaha river give the onions a little bit of extra oomph. Terroir and all that jazz.
I stopped in Cobbtown for some food and and a coke and ate way too many cookies but felt great and ready to do another 50 miles which is what I had ahead of me. Thought today would be about 95 miles but had to divert around a couple more closed roads. And then once I got to the Big Hammock WMA finally after a bit of nerve wracking riding on a narrow highway with truck traffic, I was bound and determined to see the river. So I rode the rough gravelled roads out towards the river hoping for a grand vista but it was not to be, there is very little terrain relief down here in the swampy flatlands beside the river. I found a little kayak launch eventually though and saw a glimpse of a rather swollen river, or it looked that way to me. Turned around and decided to head back towards the official camping area, hoping it had fewer mosquitoes. On the way I felt my rear tire going soft and I had a mini panic attack. Before, I had felt it almost bottom out on one of the rather large rocks that was holding the road down. Had been meaning to put more air in it the past couple of days. I looked it over and it was a minor puncture right in the middle of the tread. Easy plug. Had it fixed in 5 minutes, less time than it took to pump it back up. I find it the height of irony that I slammed that tire over all that gravel in north GA and WNC without issue and I somehow get a puncture in the swampy bottomlands of the Altamaha.... to be fair though it was quarried gravel from nowhere near here. And it should be said that the tire is completely bald at this point as it has about 6k miles on it.
Rode the rest of the way back towards the highway (trying to minimize miles tomorrow). Mosquitoes were pretty aggressive here too so I just set my tent up fast and jumped in as soon as I could, the hell with cooking anything.
