The storm last night raged on till midnight so I slept in a little this morning. I went back and got some faucet water from the state park. I wandered around High Bluff cemetery for a good while looking for three generations of relatives. They had a plug outside the bathrooms(which were locked) so I used that to charge things while I looked around. Eventually I found everyone, and got going.
It quickly became apparent that the crazy amount of rain did a number on the rolling resistance of the dirt roads. I have ridden plenty of wet, sandy dirt roads in the past and in my experience they usually are perhaps a bit better than dry. Well after a certain amount of rain it becomes detrimental. Because sometimes it was like riding quicksand. I rode 4 miles on a rutted road that only had one fresh track since the rain, a dirt bike with super knobby tires. And there were several times where this person had to get off and push his machine as it was too much apparently. I managed the whole road without walking but most was done at about 5mph, at a medium to hard effort. Honestly felt like I was climbing a 7% grade but somehow worse because there simply was no good line. I finally decided the easiest thing was to follow the dirt bike's tire print. It was an effort of concentration to do this though. Eventually I turned off and the road surface never was that bad again thankfully. I visited a cemetery off the road on private land on the thought that it contained an ancestor but it did not. A relative but not a direct ancestor. Still it was pretty cool to see. They actually placed a marker for a "faithful" slave and marked his first name but, tellingly, didn't bury him within the confines of the iron fence the whole family was buried in.
In Folkston I got a milkshake and an impossible burger and dawdled inside for a little while in the air conditioning and wifi. Afterward I rode the 5 or so miles to Sardis cemetery and primitive church. I wasn't really feeling continuing on because anyway I'd have had to stealth camp somewhere. This was as good a place as any. Has a really cool old all wooden church, a faucet, and acres of grass, and it's quiet.
