I didn't sleep all that long but I did feel rested when I got up just before sunrise. Despite the dire rain forecasts, it didn't rain all night and the skies to the west were all clear. I grabbed a snack for breakfast at the Love's, and stopped by a nice park on the edge of town for water. I didn't see a faucet anywhere but the church next door had one. I decided to play it safe and stay off the dirt till the sun could dry things out a little.
Traffic was sparse the further west I went. I had another great tailwind so I made really good time.
I crossed the 100th meridian which is sometimes thought as a dividing line between east and west in the US. Thus I entered the panhandle of Oklahoma. The temperature was in the seventies all morning, and not super humid, just lovely.
I stopped in the little town of Forgan where I found a nice little park with water and I cooked a meal for lunch. Lunch! Such a civilized activity to take part in. .
The road grid in that part of OK was labeled either NS ## or EW ##. For a long while my bikepacking addled brain interpreted NS as "Non State" 700 or whatever. And the EW ones as Emergency.... And I filled in the blank with Weasel. Emergency Weasel 1480, yeah, that makes total sense. I know some roads in Georgia were preceded by an E for Emergency, when 911 came along in the 90s all the roads had to have some sort of name. When you have too many to name traditionally, you assign a number. Or perhaps go down a list. US presidents(Irwin County, GA), or flowers(Ben Hill County, GA).
Of course the NS is north south. And the EW is east west. And the numbers are really logical. They start with 100 or 1000 at the county line and count up 10 or 100 every mile. Simple.
Sometimes along the highway there would be signs that explained exactly who owned what section and where it was located to the half mile. All on a large white board with black letters. Also every few miles a green sign would point down one of the roads for a cemetery. So orderly.
I decided to get back on the TAT as the sun had been out most of the morning. I was glad I did because it was great. Nothing special, just a lightly graveled dirt road that paralleled the highway. But it was nice to be able to relax and not have 70+mph trucks occasionally whirring past. Everyone was very courteous but that gets really annoying fast.
I arrived in Liberal soon and quickly got a room in a hotel for the first time of the trip. I really needed to recharge my batteries, both literally and figuratively.
