Mosquitos were mostly gone in the morning, thankfully. We had a relatively flat gravel cruise through a big empty basin (for real very empty- the main landmark everyone mentioned was a shipping container). We lunched and briefly siesta’d at the wildlife refuge ranger station. We then had a mini-summit at Red Rock Pass, which marked the end of Montana! Some ATVers gave us ice water and cookies which was a fine celebration. We discovered that there was a pizza place near our camp destination that would be open, so we had a rallying cry of ‘pizza for dinner!’ as we ticked off the rest of the miles into Island Park, including a fun sandy doubletrack section. We met two northbound ladies during a brief sojourn at a Subway to wait out an intense rain shower (they rode right into it- either badass or crazy, we’re not sure). The rest of the miles were mostly pleasant ATV track riding, and the pizza and beer were delicious.
