Today started inauspiciously, I found a great breakfast cafe near my hotel in Deusto and after having a good meal I stood up to take my tray back but didn't realise there was a 4 inch step down to the counter. As the tray and myself hit the floor I was a tadge embarrassed muttering in Portuguese "Desculpe" as I hadn't quite adjusted to being in Spain yet, making the situation even worse. So I cycled off along the river passing first the Gugenheim then past the impressive train station and the market. I followed the river up to Durango and could clearly see snow on the mountains inland. At Durango I turned towards Eibar which is a tight awkward town to cycle through but first there is a climb to 1000ft at Zaldibar. I stopped at a bus shelter at the bottom of the climb for a quite snack before heading across to Eibar. From there the road follows the Deba river to the coast at Deba and a great coastal road down to Zarautz. The coast is rocky and rugged and the road hugs it - this was great cycling. After Zarautz there is a further hill to get over before dropping down into Orio after which it is flat all the way following the river across to Lasarte at which point there is a nasty intersection of motorways which is a nightmare to cycle, however I'd been here before and worked out where a small of road cycle route starts which takes you straight into the city.
