Blast! Baby’s down. Dave drove me an hour north, we got there and everything was acting fine! Then went down again and we spent all day in this bicycle shop. The owner let me come before opening, then stayed at it long enough to miss an afternoon weightlifting competition where he was to be giving out the awards. He really wanted to fix it. The diagnostics showed nothing, so he cleaned the terminals but that isn’t the issue with the power assist. At least we know I didn’t fry the electrical system when it started pouring the other night. I talked with Moses at my bike shop in Salem, and we agreed that Bosch needs to be on the other end of the phone, but they are closed for the weekend. There’s an e-Bike technician in Lexington, KY, and we will be near there on Monday.
Sooo, we navigated back to pick up Dee, and came across Cliff & Kathy on the way. Dave let me off and I hopped onto Tom’s spare 10 speed, rode 70 min and only went 10.7 miles! I realized I had no headlamp or tools on the bike with several hours left to ride and it was getting dark. So just as I was texting Dave and Dee to pick me up when they passed, they drove around the corner and I flagged them. I was cold and spent, and it was a relief to get to camp after all the efforts of today.
The whole process meant I had to START about 40 miles past last night’s camp. Meaning I wasn’t going to ride every mile, coast to coast. What do you do? I tried everything reasonable, and even unreasonable… yesterday was insane pushing that bike up those hills! So when I was riding Tom’s bike, I was thinking about that and was surprised to realize that my heart truly was at peace. I feel proud of my efforts, will ride in the pickup tomorrow, then head straight to Lexington Monday morning. It’s okay.
And you all have been so supportive, and I’ve met such generous people along the way. It’s always the journey within the trip that is so meaningful!
