Cold but sunny or partly cloudy today. We had to have hot chocolate at our first break. Today being Sunday, many places close at 1PM. We found a supermarket and bought some stuff for lunch. Roy discovered some little boxes like the apple juice boxes kids take for lunch, but these contained white wine. Roy is crucial to pur survival. The route is marked by little white signs with a green bicycle. I usually pedal right past them, but Roy almost never misses one. Without Roy, we'd probably have bicycled into Syria by now. The route remains almost level except when we have to turn away from the river. Even then, the hills are low. Today is Pentecost so many people are making a long weekend. We had trouble finding a hotel. We finally landed a reservation at a somewhat isolated, off-route hotel located along a freeway. There's no restaurant and we weren't sure there would be an open restaurant in Mesves, the nearest town. We were delighted to discover on arrival that the town was having a festival. There were street vendors, music, and hindreds of people in the little town. One of the vendor booths was decorated with Confederate flags - it's not clear what that was about. Anyway, we bought a cheese bread and some mini-quiches, a big sausage, and some cheeses and carried them to the hotel for dinner. We had a marvelous welcome from the owner, a chat around the box of wine in the afternoon sunshine, and a hearty dinner of country bread and sausage!
