This was a somewhat difficult day. It was our longest so far at nearly 100K. The hard part resulted from changing paths. We have been following the "Loire a Velo" route. That route ends at Nevers. We will continue on the EuroVelo 6 route. We figured, "Why make the big turn to go to Nevers when we can go more directly to Decize across the peninsula between the Allier River and the Loire?" Oh, that I could take that back! The French countryside is laced with charming little lanes, formerly cow paths, which don't necessarily appear on our maps. The names change; the signage is erratic and confusing. At one point we were staring at two signs, pointing in opposite directions, for the town we were trying to reach. Both roads had numbers, but neither number corresponded to what shown on our map! Unsurprisingly, this led to some off-route wandering so. See for example, the little out and back on the map before Fleury-sur-Loire. That sort of mistake is a lark at ten AM when one is warm and fresh. When it's late and everyone is cold and tired, the mistake leads to caustic appraisals of the ne responsible for the mistake (me, in this case, regrettably). Plus, we didn't know where we were going to sleep, adding anxiety. Many places were closed for the celebration of Pentecoste the day before. Fortunately, Roy found a hotel along the canal with rooms and an open restaurant.
An Australian couple, even older than us, if that's possible, riding the other way, joined us for dinner. They evidently spend much of the year bicycling. They explained that, although they are both retired teachers, their house in Melbourne sold for so much when they retired that they could buy a condo in Australia, plus a property in Canada, and still waste their time touring! The wife, Bettina, has arthritis. Her bike is fitted with electric shifters because she can no longer grasp the manual shifters.
