A few drawbacks before the ride start, cell phone battery was dead so I grabbed spar battery to charge phone and I forgot to install Power Meter pedal batteries did both at the same time. I was 5 min late to start at 5:00am, but it all worked out perfectly met Albert at the designated location just as he got there. Off we went on our Hilly ride adventure... I kinda knew what to expect and where we were going, Albert was clueless. Besides he never did a Hilly ride with this much climbing and the distance would be his second longest. He was up for the challenge but I changed it up slightly from our long ride with some nice climbing. On that ride we started out much slower and he had too much energy until the end, this ride was going to be 10 miles shorter so the faster start, I kept the power effort consistent except on the climbing where we upped the power and maintained the average flat wattage downhill. Albert is a strong ride and loves the challenge of the hills which why we did this ride. Our hill warmup was the hills on Monmouth Rd (Rte 537) from Rte 68. Those of you from the area that know about the 3.5 miles one way of Hill Road out in Arneytown area was our first big adventure a down and back. Albert did these hills well especially for his first challenging hills. We attacked the hills as well as downhills. From we ventured out to Upper Freehold area and started some long steady climbs that were between 2-5% with a few steeper climbs thrown in for good measures! This continued for the next 20 miles until we got to our first and only water stop. We did make a few short stops at different locations for me to to change battery for cell phone and to get it working. I made two wrong turns both because I went into the old route that I changed and realized as soon as passed the correct route. What I didn't realize or forgot, the slight changes caused us to have long steady climbs one after another! Albert initially attacked them hard but since they were so long and him not knowing when they would end began to feel the effects. He hung tough and would drop back before we would crest the summit and start down the other side, he never gave up nor complained he would work down hill to catch me only hit the next climb. Our water stop was at a 7-11, we filled up out bottles and me my Camelback and we ate some food that we brought, I did have to convince of the value to refuel. I mentioned to him how I never ate anything during the rides by the I was running on empty. We still didn't eat enough on this ride, my Garmin said I should have taken 1200 calories and I took in less than half that. I did feel it my last 15 miles big time and the headwind and being solo didn't help either! After the stop we were off for more hill adventures as we started to climb about 1 miles out something seemed missing and I realized I left my money, ID, tools, tubes and cell phone pouch outside of 7-11 on top of some crates near the door. I turned around to retrieve it as Albert waited for me. I get there nothing was touched, I don't think anyone noticed it. Put it on and the store employee we paid for the water from just happened to come out to put something into a bin at side of building we briefly spoke as I was pulling away. I speedily got back to Albert as he was patiently waiting and probably wondering what did he get himself into, lol! I know I was beginning to wonder where did all these hills come from because I didn't remember them on my test ride out there on Monday. Every time I was about to tell him after this climb it will be flat, there was another climb. I could tell he was starting really hurt on all these hills. We didn't stop at the WaWa because we had enough water to carry him the lasts 12+ miles, The great thing from the WaWa it was flat and downhill, the bad thing it started to get hot like an oven. Albert was nearing empty so I thought, I asked him to pull but at a pace he wanted me to pull at.... That was a mistake, he opened up and picked up the pace. We finally make it back to Monmouth Rd and the traffic was much more than he was used to so we got off the road but it took us a little further than the original plan, but the road was actually nicer, much more quiet and well worth the extra distance, well maybe not for me, lol. We stopped and I did what I have never done before took 2 pictures of us which is posted here. He headed home a few miles away and I headed home that was 14 miles away. As I mentioned earlier it was grueling, with only a few short spats of easy sailing, I guess it pay backs for what I put Albert thru! we separated with him smiling and said he was looking forward to our next adventure ride!
