Wow. Decided to ride the flat flat trails along the Rio Grand to assess how my fitness holds up at roughly a mile above sea level. TL;DR friends: it did. Heart rate never got very high cuz duh, no climbing but a stretch on the paved trail at 18 mph didn’t leave me gassed. Such a different environment from the woods of Maryland. And there was mud! In the desert! Bosque is the name of a forest along a river (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosque). It was amazing how as soon as you left a bridge behind you had no sense of being near a big sprawling city. Trails ranged from wide C&O towpath-like sections to twisty single track. Discovered out-and-backs are not necessary with trails on both sides of the river and multiple trails ( official? Peoples choice? Who knows!) on the east side. Markings? Nah! Who needs those?
