Today's weather was in the upper 70's / low 80's. Winds from the North West. I got out around 9:45 AM. I wore the standard kit, arm coolers, 1 base layer. Today's ride was to determine how the legs feel. They were sluggish to start and persisted through at least half of the ride. Reminding myself that I did a 70 mile ride two days ago and doing a fulll body strength training the day after, I think the slugishness was understandable. I made my way through OTR doing modest tempo. I reached Route 202 in less than average time. I wasn't going for time, so I didn't care. The Banducci wall felt good. I was in my limits until the last 100 yards or so. The false flat was a recovery / hydration / stretching zone. The last part of the climb started modest. I saw 2 cyclists ahead of me, so I used that as a carrot. I didn't attack, though. I wanted till about 1/2 mile to the summit to pass them. I got to the summit, took a few moments break, then headed downhill. I was relaxed and able to recover, doing my tuck. The trek out to SS was moderate tempo. HR around 135, plus or minus. After reaching the front entrance, I slowed the pace down a bit and stretched on the bike. I then made my way up the back entrance well within my limits. A modest push over the top. The downhill was fun, nearing 40 MPH doing a tuck. There was a car ahead of me and I was on their bumper towards the last few hundred yards of the downhill. Then the usual push through SS. When I exited SS, I stopped, I think I was adjusting something on my bike. It took a minute or two. Then the trip back on Banducci. At this point, the winds were calm. I didn't have much of a tailwind, so the pace was slower than usual. When I reached Pelliser, I took a few moments to relax, then settled into a moderate tempo. Say, 18-20 MPH. The wind was more prevalent at this point. This was more or less the same till I reached CVR climb. I kept a good tempo going up the climb, well within my limits. All the while assessing my body's signals. No real ailments at this point, other than the bit of sluggishness that still persisted. I was somewhat concerned how Keene was going to feel. I kept my cool and commenced my way to Route 202. Once there, I waited for traffic. Did some traffic negotiation to OTR. OTR was pleasant. The weather continued to be somewhat cool. I did a modest push over Mariposa. I then made my way to the mail lockers. I swapped bottles out and then headed up WTR. Once at the summit, I stopped to remix some Cytomax, then headed downhill. I pored water on my arm coolers. The evaporation cooling sensation was a welcome reprieve. I made my way down to the base conservatively. Out of the saddle when needed. My legs weren't responding well to the risers, but I didn't let that distract my concentration. Once at the base, I wanted to BIO, but there weren't any facilities at the base. I reluctantly decided to hold it till I got home. The trip back started modest. I was gauging my leg's responsiveness. To my surprise, they felt better. As the climb went on, I was able to settle into a tempo without that sensation of interminably. Such was the case for the majority of the ride. I was able to burn my matches where they counted the most. My body was responding well until after reaching the Loop Monument. My right calf started to cramp. I was dismayed by this, and decided on a mitigation plan. I ended up stopping before the second riser. All I did was pull over, clip out both feet from the pedals and shook my legs, one at a time. I did this for a couple of minutes. After that I commenced the remainder of the climb. I started modest, letting my legs warm back up, and then maintained no less than moderate tempo. To my content, I noticed that the leg cramping had subsided completely. I have noted this as a mitigation practice and will use it during the GranFondo if need be. The remainder of the climb was business as usual. Keeping the tempo nice and stead, listening to my body and gauging my efforts. After reaching the summit, I was relieved. The next time I do this climb will be on next week's GranFondo. I then made my way home. Concentration was real good today. No gremlins to be found. Suffice it to say, I was in the zone for the majority of the ride. Ailments consisted of right hand numbness, sluggish feeling in the leg, mild lower back soreness, right calf soreness, some mild knee soreness. All of which were mitigated or diminished as the ride went on. Balance and form felt good. Not perfect, but on the right track. Gear is working well. I noticed that the cadence sensor was not detected by the GPS. When I reached the end of OTR, I stopped and fiddled with the GPS. Putting it in discover cadence mode. A few moments later, it detected the sensor and was operable from that point on. Other notes, I saw about 6 other cyclists today.
