Today's weather was nice and cool. Low 50's, mild winds from the North West. Turbulent in some places. I wore the standard kit, 1 base layer, arms. I felt real good out the door. My body was responding very well. It didn't take long before I realized I was going to have a potential good elapsed time today. I made it to the end of OTR in no time. Confirming that I was going to make good time. While on my way up OTR, my knee brushed against the headlight and it detached and wasn't re-mountable. It took about 20 or 30 seconds to find it on the ground. I put it in my pocket after I found it. I put in high tempo up Banducci. With only a moments reprieve on the false flat. When I reached the summit, I noticed that fog had rolled in, near SS. I wasn't sure what to expect, so I took a few moments rest and then headed downhill. The wind continued to be mild. When I got to the base, I was assessing the fog situation. It looked a bit dangerous. Fortunately, my tail light was on and working. I was hesitant to continue to SS, but then I told myself, let's see what's a 1/4 mile into the fog. Turns out that there were patches of dense fog, mixed with patches of clearness. It was barely safe enough to continue, but I decided to go for it. I put the hammer down, thinking I want to get out of the danger zone ASAP. There was a few hundred yards of clearness after the front entrance to SS. The climb around the back wasn't so much clear. Then the downhill. It was dense fog and I was all eyes and ears at this point. No tuck today. I made it the tunnel well under 1 hour. SS continued to be foggy, so I was looking around, situation awareness, and cautiously made my way through town. The return felt a bit more dangerous. I pulled over a couple times to let traffic by. Around half way to Pelliser, I took my headlight out of my pocket and held it facing forward with my left hand, all the while holding onto the handle-bars with two hands. After making it to Pelliser, the fog persisted. About 1/4 mile or so, the fog cleared up completely. I was out of the danger zone. I was doing good time, so I decided to put my head down and hammer. This was to be the case for the flat lands. I made it to Boss Hogs well under 1:20 hours. When I reached the last climb, I was somewhat exhausted, but I was able to keep the hammer down. Slowing a bit towards the end and putting in a good push over the top. The false flat immediately after had turbulent winds, mostly from the north-west. I was hoping I could push through quickly. But the headwind prevented me. Then Route 202... Mostly traffic mitigation. OTR was a welcome reprieve. My legs were somewhat sapped at the end of OTR, so I couldn't hammer Mariposa as I would have liked. The remainder was cruise control to home. Concentration was spot on. I was alert and had stuff to think about. I was in the zone. Balance and form felt real good. Ailments consisted of mild lower back soreness, some right calf soreness, and left palm blister. Gear is working great, other than the light that detached. Other note, no other cyclists today.
