Heading north out of Winkler on one of the most washboarded roads we’ve seen,(the same one we rode to Dead Horse Cidery last night) we took the first road to the east. I think the RM’s in Manitoba have way too much money to spend on gravel and graders! We saw a lot of both today. Near Plum Coulee we turned north and made our way to a point west of Morris and then headed east again into town. We found one road that looked like it had been grass and bush covered and had just been graded to take out the vegetation and then left that way. It was rutted, soft and lumpy, a bit of a challenge. The closer we got to Morris the more we ran into dirt roads that had been graded to clear the spring ruts and had not received enough rain to firm them up. Some of them were very soft and dusty! We snuck into Morris the back way and stopped at a Timmi’s for snacks and drinks. Leaving Morris we turned on to a dirt road that went on for 17 kms with only a couple of short stretches that were graveled, one of them at a rather impressive country church that a sign said we were welcome to explore during daylight hours. We continued east on dirt until we saw some showers approaching and not wanting to be caught on the dirt roads if it rained we bailed to Highway #23 and rode pavement to the park. East of Morris the prevalent road surface is dirt with usually only gravel surfaces to each farm from the nearest highway for all weather access. It must be fun in this country when it rains.
