So it seems that many campgrounds have some animal issues, some masked and ring-tailed, some of the black ursus variety and some of the cute cuddly striped kind. Both at Courtney Lake and again last night at Van Riper we were constantly chasing Chipmunks away from our tent. Last night they took to climbing under the tent fly to look for snacks from our gear. We were jumping up from the picnic table every few minutes to send them packing into the nearby bushes! I think it would be in Lynne’s and my best interests to stay clear of Churchill Manitoba. I shudder at the thought of what might happen there! 😳
We headed out this morning on Highway 41 but dismayed by the traffic level we picked up the Iron Ore Heritage Trail at Humboldt, which at that point is an ATV trail. It was surprisingly well packed which we attributed to recent rains but the presence of a large hydraulic packer parked by the trail a few miles up indicated some mechanical intervention. Other than a couple of sandy sections the trail was a sweet smooth quiet gravel ride to Ishpeming where the trail becomes crusher dust coated and then paved. Other than some poorly signed spots where the trail passes through some towns, it took us right into Marquette, in fact to within a half block of out next Warmshowers host. Marquette seems like another bike friendly town with bike route signs in abundance and every downtown bike rack absolutely full of bicycles. Hopefully the forecasted rain for tonight is not heavy, we are hoping to explore a bit tomorrow and get a feel for the cycling vibes here.
