Needed to get some miles in (covered bridge ride is coming...!) and the forecast is for temps in the upper 90s. So departed Lewistown before 7:30am on a 50-mile loop designed to use a bunch of rarely ridden roads AND not go to Pennsylvania. Pretty tired at the end; the last 10 miles were challenging. Lenhart Road at 46.8 miiiiiight not have been the best choice. Whole bunch of climbing on tired legs. Did not seem so hard in the other direction, two miles into a ride ... .. also discovered why most of the routes from Taneytown toward Woodsboro don't end up on MD 194 til New Midway. No, friends and neighbors, smart people don't get on the highway at Y Road because it's a two-mile climb to New Midway. Nice wide shoulder/bike lane so it was safe and traffic was not an issue... just more bad planning and not paying attention to the map ... The usual country roads on that route have their climbs, but they're shorter, sharper and quieter. Doh. Forgot that a goodly portion of Shoemaker Road starting about 19.5 is ... gravel. Fortunately it's extremely smooth tiny gravel so the, uh, gravel bike didn't mind at all. So THAT'S why that hasn't been ridden recently ... Heat started being bothersome at about New Midway and required a stop at about 40 in Woodsboro to put out foot fires and try to recover a bit. It mostly worked.
