Jacksonville to New Bern

Day 23

Day 24 down day for rain/rest. see 3/4 link here on ridewithgps

Blown tire at mile 8. Tire sidewall torn. Tube blown apart.
Uber back to Walmart near start, then back to bike, all captured on GPS. real mileage made good 48 miles.

It was discovered at nearly the last minute that the ride to New Bern today was not 68 miles but only 48. This was due to previously insufficient operator head space and maybe forgetting to take into account the proper Coriolis Effects.

48 miles made good. Many extra miles captured on ride with GPS.

This seemed a happy circumstance, but only 8 miles into the trip I blew out a tire with a tremendous bang. Shredded the tube and tore the bead from the tire. This was either due to A: an over inflated wheel due to a reading of 60 on the used tire guy's gauge being actually more like 80, or B: a pinched tube that went unnoticed and not a problem till it was a problem. Either one or the other or both happened, but it's irrelevant now, and a new tube was not going to be all that was needed. Uber is a wonderful thing. Ubering to Walmart for a new tire and a replacement spare tube was the solution. Chris contributed a CO2 canister to get pressure up well enough to complete the remaining 40 miles.

The link to the ride captured the crazy route the Uber guy took, including a missed turn and back tracking. I had the GPS and phone trackers with me on the Uber, having to take the GPS off the handlebar to flip the bike over to work on it.

Head winds developed that slowed the ride. We made it to New Bern and a good hotel with a sleepy bear out front.

Another fine day of riding. There will be some work to properly inflate the tire, purchase additional CO2 canisters, and plan the ride ahead tomorrow (Monday) since the weather is looking iffy for the next leg to likely Plymouth NC or else where.
