This is one of the harder rides, with several steep climbs. Start from Lewis and Clark park in Troutdale. The first 2.5 miles to the closed Stark Street bridge is a nice warm-up spin. The next couple miles to Springdale consists of 400 feet of climbing. Another 175 feet climbing on Hurlbert Rd follows. At mile 7.1 is the dreaded Loudon Rd climb. The first pitch, roughly 1/4 mile, gains 125 feet at 7-10% grade. A brief break follows, then it's a steep 1.1 mile climb gaining 550 feet at 10-12%. The next couple miles to Deverell Rd has another 200 feet or so of climbing, but not nearly as steep as Loudon. The next 3.1 miles and 400 feet of climbing is on Deverell Rd. There are two short hills at 8-10% grade. Go right at Larch Mtn. Rd and continue for about 1/2 mile to Brower Rd. The 3 miles on Brower Rd adds another 300 feet of climbing, but there are a few short downhills mixed in. Go left at Haines Rd for a lengthy downhill. There is a steep climb at Latourell Creek, nearly all of it at 9-11% grade. In summary, there is 2100 feet of climbing in 18.5 miles. It is mostly downhill on Larch Mtn. Rd to the historic highway, then more downhill to the Stark Street bridge. The final 11.3 miles goes through Troutdale then to the Harlow Rd bike path. The bike path extends 3 miles, ending just before Marine Drive near Blue Lake. Returned via the bike path and through Troutdale back to the park.
