Intended to take bike to Gravelly Point or the marina just south of there buuuut ... stupidly answered a call right at quitting time. An hour+ later, it was too late to fight the traffic over the bridge to Alexandria, etc etc.
Hmmm, Well let's ride from the office. That meant carrying the CAC to get across the base next door and then back into work but so be it. That also meant the goal of 30 miles came up short. Thought about staying on the trail through Georgetown and then going back through the tunnel at Foundry Branch but the traffic on Canal Road is a bit of a deterrent.
So turned south on the Key Bridge and headed downriver on the other side. Pretty strong wind from the south (it IS March after all) and it was a good workout to just plow along in spots. The two trail bridges by the airport -- uphill and heading south -- were definitely a challenge. Once past the airport there are more obstructions that tend to slow the wind or divert it, so it got a little easier.
Saved the biggest climbs for the last third of today's program: the big bridge at 20 and then the casino hill at 22. Short stop on the biggest one for about 30 seconds to gather and then up we went. Definitely feeling better cardio-wise, though for sure not all the way there.
Was feeling pretty good back on campus, so did a loop around the place to get to 28.
Smooooth, new, fixed trail on the Oxon Cove trail after years and years of beat up, crumbling and weed-infested "pavement".
Lovely day, temps around 70 and for once the wind was not cold.
Legs felt ok; let's check those again tomorrrow...
