Strong ride out at 18-20 mph average. Rode down to the first restroom on PCH to wait for Mark Greenwald in his new Velomobile to show up. While waiting a lady recognized me from having ridden my recumbent racing trike out to the coast a few times and probably passed her somewhere along the way. Her name is Ashley and she rides a a beautiful almost iridescent redish almost burgundy Trek. We chatted for a while and it turns out she had ridden out from the gas station at the top of climb of Green River and the 91 freeway! This intrigued me as she had her arms, legs and face covered but showed no signs of sweat and had such an obvious appreciation of cycling and going far. She asked where I came from today and was heading and decided to ride to Balboa and then Huntington Beach and back with me.
Mark eventually called letting me know he was still up in Long Beach. So she and I road down to the harbor with me. It became self evident right away that she had pedal finesse or a smooth spin and delivered power to the grounds very well. She lives in Colton and like myself has been looking for others who want to do huge rides! Afterr enjoying probably a good half hour of soaking up the beauty of the area and taking a few photos Mark called and had finally arrived at the restroom we were at earlier. So we rode to meetup. You can see his wild Velomobile in the pictures attached to this ride entry.
We all rode up to Huntington Beach together and his rig drew lots of curious folks on sidewalks and in vehicles. It as fun to witness.
We had smoothies at Amazon Bowl in downtown HB then cruised back down Main St to witness the after the 4th of July festivities. Pictures attached of that also.
Upon leaving he split off to head back to Long Beach and we headed South on PCH back to the Santa Ana River Trail.
Even though we had a slight tail wind, I began too feel the effects of having to stay up until 11pm as 2 of our 3 elderly Yorky - Poms came completely unglued barking their vocal cords out and could not be shut down even after copious amounts of CBD doggy treats (that just made them poop Lincoln Logs galore!)
I’m normally in bed by 630pm and up at 2-3am everyday. It’s how I’m wired.
Anyhow… Ashley road like she had e-assist! Mine you, there was long stretches where
I was tapping out 19 - 22 mph and not closing the gaps she created! Sometimes she’s wandering 1/2 mile off front and despite temperatures in the 90’s she never cracked a sweat! I did eventually see salt accumulating on the back of her jersey just before we got to Green River.
Amazing rider! I’ve been searching for years for someone local that loves ultra distances to ride with.
We exchanged contact info and I rode off feeling inspired and still having another 17 miles to go.
It’s weird about me I definitely dig deeper when with with resonant other riders. As soon as we parted I found it much harder to feel compelled to hold a high tempo. I knew the heat was taking its toll also. I stopped more times during this 100+ miler than most I’ve done to relax and enjoy the scenery, rehydrate and top off calories. That definitely contributed to being able to lay down much longer stretches of high speed power output.
The cruising Balboa and Huntington Beach definitely cut the average speeds a lot also. But a an absolutely great ride overall.
Thanks Mark and Thanks Ashley. You both made my day. May we enjoy
