This loop has potential in both directions, depending on when you want to climb Col du WhiteStore or Col du PeachTree (in the other direction). Early in the route? Later? And what about the twin peaks of Montevideo, Col du Poole'sStore and Col du RocklandsFarm? Both have pitches over 11% in spots. Do those as ascents or descents? And of course, what about Mont Schaeffer starting at 34.5, finishing off your legs with THAT?
Decisions, decisions.
Today being humid and sunny, the decision was to climb the two miles of WhiteStore (miles 7.9 to 10), descend (well, generally) from 10 to 20 (still plenty of climbs in that stretch) and then climb the twin peaks and Mont Schaeffer. That manages the shade pretty well (more toward the latter half of the ride).
Probably the worst part was the 4 miles on the towpath ... flat, yes. Boring, ABSOLUTELY, which then leads to thinking about how you feel, which is never good. Then there was the wandering about the soccerplex at the end trying to find more water. Was turned away from the field house (no water for you!) before finding a sympathetic desk minder at the indoor pool.
Legs felt pretty good, especially on Col du WhiteStore. Managed to avoid the smaller chain ring! (Can't say the same for the Montevideo peaks or the Schaeffer climb.) Getting better at posture so shoulders and neck aren't screaming as early and often. Still having water management problems. Three bottles, maybe? Two just don't seem to be enough. Surrender and use a Camelbak?
Gonna need to up the standard ride mileage to at least 40 soon, with an aim to getting comfortable at 50 before mid-August .... covered bridge (metric) century approaches ....
