The road nearby was very quiet all night and I slept very soundly all night with no interruptions. I woke at 5:38 and there were some rumblings on the highway but I rolled over and went back to sleep till 6. I packed up fairly quickly and left not too long after 7, just before dawn again. With the landscape so open with all the farmland the sunrise was long and beautiful.
The roads at first near the farms were still kinda sandy but I pressed on, hoping that in the WMA that there would be better maintenance. I prepared to bail on those roads and go back to nearby pavement if it got too bad.
Thankfully inside the WMA it was very well maintained with lots of gravel on the sand which was bumpy and slow but easy rolling, much preferable to deep sand. I rode past a bunch of ponds that were well marked and only saw two cars. All the roads I took through appeared to be open to vehicles as a lot of others branching off were as well.
While it was enjoyable this section was also slow. And in addition as I discovered when I finally turned East towards Bainbridge, I would have a headwind all day.
In Bainbridge I stopped for food and fluids right away and then explored the parkland along the river. I ended up riding all of the paths, more than I had intended but it was nice out and still relatively early. I then did a quick ramble around downtown, saw Granddad's old shop and the Port City bank. I left in good spirits and was really rolling fast on pavement out of town.
After a few miles I turned off the paved road to a dirt road in good shape. I came to an intersection and found the road j was to take was gated so I went around. A few more miles later I encountered a road closed sign but followed the track anyway to see the end. It got fainter as I went down and eventually ended, no sign or gate. Just a washed out culvert. So I found my way across which wasn't too much trouble and went down the track on the other side. Eventually it got really briary with a downed tree right where it joined with a side road. I had to clear a path for me and the bike which involved some scratches to myself but I made it out.
I made it to Thomasville pretty famished and nearly out of water. I did a bit of exploring of the downtown but then headed straight away for the Food Lion I had planned to go by. Before I went in the store a lady was handing out handwritten Bible verses and I took one just to be nice.
Against my better judgement since I was shopping hungry I bought a big tub of a yogurt I like and then I had to eat the whole thing not long after at a park since it doesn't keep well or even taste very good once lukewarm. This kept me all the rest of the next 30 miles to my eventual campsite next to a solar farm in the sliver of woods leftover between the road and the gate for the panels. It's plenty of cover from the road. Only trouble is, this is a bit of a wildlife trail so I had to persuade through shining my headlamp to get them to go around. Then I had to do the same for a possum.
Then, a big group of hogs start coming towards me and I got a little freaked out. I went out of the tent and quickly realized that they had to be inside the fence where the panels are. No idea how they got there but I don't think they can get over to me. But for some reason they are focused on rooting around and making lots of loud pig noises right near me. Very unnerving and I hope they move on soon.
