I left Kokkino Chorio at 09:00. The sun was already bright, the sky cloudless, and the air warm — the kind of morning that promises heat before noon. The road wound easily through Kambia, the tarmac still cool from night air, before dropping into the fast descent of the Four Hills Climb.
From there, the route picked up the Aspro Tracks — gravel and stone, loose under the tyres — and led on to Gavalochori. The village was just stirring: the clink of cups in the square, the first voices carrying from open windows. Beyond it lay the Stonework Track, a narrow line between dry walls, where each stone felt set by hand, each curve holding the memory of labour.
Then came the familiar entry to the Roller Coaster, rough and rhythmic, followed by the short rise of Memento Hill. The loop above Kalyves opened wide views to the sea, the morning haze softening the horizon. I dropped towards the Kiliaris River, where the track narrowed and ran cool beneath the plane trees. At the Stone Well I stopped briefly, the water dark and clear, a reminder of how life has long clung to the shaded edges of this valley.
From there, I turned south to Armeni. Coffee at Kiosky — hot, bitter, grounding — restored the rhythm of the ride. The village square was quiet but alive: the low talk of old men, the creak of chairs, the smell of baking drifting through.
Afterwards, I climbed towards the Turkish Fort, its ruins still marking the pass between valleys, then followed the Olive Press Track across the ridge to Kaina. The track rose steadily, rough and uneven, the air thickening in the midday warmth.
At Kaina my GPS reset itself, erasing the remaining miles. The ride continued, but only in memory — the final turns unrecorded, the distance lost to the machine, though not to the day.
Reflection – In the Manner of Herodotus
Herodotus once wrote that “the remembrance of deeds, great and small, is what rescues men from the wasting of time.” The Histories were, in his own words, an attempt to ensure that nothing worthy of record should fade into silence. Yet even he, writing in the shadow of empire, understood that much of life passes unrecorded — carried not in tablets or scrolls but in memory and story, in what the Greeks called mnēmē, the living recollection of the heart.
What is a lost GPS track compared to that older record — the memory of a road, a bend, a moment of sunlight between olive branches? The ancients kept their journeys not in numbers but in tales told by the fire or repeated to travellers who came after. For them, the true map was drawn in words and witness, in the telling of where one had been and what one had seen.
There is a quiet truth in that. The machine may lose the record; the climb and descent vanish from data; but the ride itself remains, imprinted in body and mind — in the small fatigue of the legs, the smell of dust, the taste of coffee at Armeni, the sound of the tyres over stone. These things are not data. They are memory — the kind that cannot be erased or reset.
So when Herodotus speaks of preserving memory against time’s decay, he is not only writing of kings and battles, but of small journeys such as this — moments that, though unrecorded, still belong to the story of a life well travelled.

English:
The path forgotten by the wheel, the heart remembers still,
for what was lived and not recorded bends yet to memory’s will.
Greek:
Τον δρόμο που ξεχάσανε τ’ αχνάρια του τροχού,
τον θυμάται η καρδιά ξανά, μ’ αγάπη και καημό παλαιού.
