I slept like a log for 7-8 hours and got back going towards my original route. The dirt road I had camped off of was very rideable but I wasn't keen on any more deep sand roads so I decided to ride in to Waycross a different way on Mostly pavement through the small town of Argyle. There was one tiny store there and I got a Powerade and a coke and rolled very fast on pavement with a decent cross tailwind. I was feeling good so I decided to roll the dice and take an alternate dirt shortcut which was also very fast, and another dirt alternate that brought me into town from the southwest. Since it was Sunday there wasn't much going on in town.
I rambled around the little downtown and then headed back northeast through the rest of town and on the way visited my great grandparents grave in the city cemetery. The highway over to Pierce county was busy but not too bad and everyone gave plenty of room. I fought the South wind as I headed back east on a series of paved back roads and quiet residential dirt roads.
I stopped in Hoboken at a DG market and filled up more on snacks since I keep running low. Burning through lots of calories. The day by now had clouded over and was humid and in the mid eighties. Very oppressive for mid October. There was rain on the way so I got going and headed out in good spirits and was ready to do some quick miles.
However just south of town and eastbound dirt road turned to deep sand and I was doing a repeat of yesterday. Mentally I was really over this kind of thing. But after I caught a rut wrong a couple of times and went into the sand on both sides (sand is absolutely everywhere on me and the bike) my body decided it had had enough too. Don't know if it was the fall or just the overuse or both but my lower back on my right side was just killing me. It really hurt pushing the bike in the sand and getting on and off. It was not good those last couple of miles but I made it and thankfully I came out to a paved road.
I rode really easy and actually kind of enjoyed this next paved back road. I found a church where I used their faucet to wash most of the sand off me and the bike. I altered my route a bit to avoid more dirt except I decided to take a good dirt road to 301 and then take that in to Folkston.
I had very little food again so I stopped at another DG market and also got an impossible Whopper from Burger King. On the way out of town the original route had me doing more dirt. By this time it has rained a bit. I did prepare for a heavy rain but I never got wet at all from the rain but it did wet the roads a bit. So I took the paved alternate which was pretty lovely late in the evening. While looking around at the road nearby on my improvised route I spotted a road called Old National Highway. I took it as it was a dirt road in good shape and found a random patch of mature lines to camp in right after sunset. Good enough. Very quiet.
