What a superb days cycling, the weather was perfect with a bright blue sky but still cool and little wind.
Rather than retrace tge route out of Daegu along the river I decided to cycle through the city and although tedious it was tolerable ... I was happy ti pick up the cycleway after 11 miles and about 2hrs though !
Straight away the river valley looked beautiful and as I had almist 70 miles to do and had lost 2hrs I cracked on.
After 20 miles I reached another huge weir which had a park area on my side with sculptures and murals, there was a huge stainless steel ball suspended above the road on curved legs - it just reminded me of Dalis Spiders outside the Guggenheim in Bilbao.
The weir itself had decked areas on each of the lifting towers and I cycled halfway across for a closer look.
Four miles later I stopped at a Motorway Service area which I sneaked into on a backroad for lunch as tgere seemed little options after this. I had some fast food chicken and Iced Tea but really I had little idea what I had ordered or even how to - good learning experience though as Im now a dab hand !
Two miles kater I reached a great cafe ... shame Ide eaten. It was on a world heritage UNESCO site called Dodong Seawon which us a 400 year old prep school for students of Korean writing and culture.
I wandered round free of charge and it was empty. The blossom was just starting and I imagined how beautiful it would be in two weeks. After 30 minutes still mindful of Todays distance Inpressed on gobsnacked at Todays highlight ....
There was a sharp looking hill soon and after passing a Korean A1 autonomous vehicle test site the track followed a curve along a riverside headland and on the leeward side the path ramped up ridiculously to almost 20% and I could hear chanting. Aroubd gge corner I reached the actual highlight of Today.
Musimsa .. a buddhist temple village which I soent another 30 minutes exploring - It was just in a perfect little spot sheltered under a craggy wood on the back of a river bend. I was stunning, best thing Ive seen in ages. Lising more cycling time I headed off up the torturous track whuch jeot just fetting steeper and I was off and pushing when the gradient went over 20% for the last half mile of the climb. A fast descent and subsequent 10miles put me back on time but I was worried there were two more similar looking 600 and 700 ft climbs on the route.
I passed a new cable stay bridge being built and hit the next climb - it was a road so I hoped it didnt get silly like the last climb. After a mile it reached 15% and I quit walikng the last 800 yards.
Then the third climb .... what can I say, a forest track again - it started with a bang and I clocked the gradient at 28% ...It was so steep I struggled to push the bike with my cycle shoes slipping on the concrete.
Soon I was 200ft above the road I had just left, which I saw disappearing ibto a tunnel through the hill I was on and I wondered. could I have cycled through it !
The gradient stayed high and my legs were done, abything over 10% and I was off and pushing.
But after only 15minutes I was at the top and only 3 mikes off my hotel. A fast descent abd I was soon in town.I had been worrued as tge tiw. looked seedy and tge hotels even worse. My hotel was called the Brown Dot ! It is however really nice. The town is just full of hotels, shops, restaurants and yes gentlemens venues. So many you wonder how tget all stay open, after wandering the town looking fir food I eventually ended up in a Korean restaurant across the road from my hotel ! Massive amounts of meat, Kimchi, veggies, sakads, mushrooms, horseradish, garlic followed which I cooked myself on a table griddle - I waz tge only customer - they were lovely however abd I was stuffed for £20
