The ride covered 29.7 km with 657 m of ascent and 656 m of descent, set along a rolling, stepped profile with three defined climbs and three descents across the Apokoronas hills. Moving time totalled 1:40:24, with an ascent time of 0:57:24 and descent in 0:43:00. Gradients reached +22.4% on the steeper sections and –13.5% on the way down. Maximum speed recorded was 54.2 km/h, averaging 17.4 km/h across wet farm tracks, compacted earth, loose limestone, and short linking sections of village tarmac, with 60% off-road. It was a winding, weather-affected route with repeated elevation changes — steady work throughout, controlled but fast.
We have had a week of heavy rain, today there was a break in the weather. So we got out.
The ride started from Kokkino Chorio, with the ground still holding water from the previous days. The initial rollout followed the usual village tarmac to Kambia before dropping quickly onto the first section of off-road, the descent of the Four Hills Climb. Conditions were immediately different from a dry run. The top layer of dust had been washed away, exposing firmer ground in places, but also leaving patches of soft mud and standing water.
The early section descended through the lower olive terraces, where drainage channels were still running lightly. The surface varied between firm compacted earth and deep water-cut ruts, requiring controlled speed and careful line choice. The first climb began gradually, lifting out of the low ground toward the ridge lines that run between Kokkino Chorio and Gavalochori. The gradient increased in short ramps, with several sections pushing above 20%, made more demanding by the damp surface reducing traction.
Crossing toward Gavalochori, the route followed the established network of the Aspro tracks. The landscape showed clear signs of the week’s weather — fresh runoff lines cut into the tracks, small stones moved onto the riding line, and sections where water had pooled in both the deep and shallow depressions. Beehives remained in place along the edges of the terraces, unaffected by the conditions.
The second phase of the ride carried a more defined climb that of Barsted Hill, building elevation then a steady ride across a sequence of gravel tracks linking the agricultural land toward Vamos. The surface here was mixed: wet limestone over hard base, intermittent mud, and sections of exposed rock. Progress remained consistent but required attention to traction, particularly on the steeper pitches.
The approach into Vamos included a faster section where the track allowed speed to build before transitioning back onto village roads. Even here, damp patches remained in shaded areas, and braking distances were extended accordingly.
This was a social ride, and the midpoint objective was clear. Coffee at Macky’s.
On arrival, the kafeneio was operating as expected. Inside, the tables were occupied, and the conversation was already underway. Midweek conditions meant a slightly different rhythm from a Sunday, but the core remained the same. A steady flow of locals, coffee cups in constant use, and small glasses of tsikoudia appearing without request. The conversation moved continuously, practical, direct, and loud enough to carry across the room.
After a week of rain, the stop carried a practical purpose as well — a chance to warm up and reset before heading back out onto wet ground.
Leaving Vamos, the route climbed again into the hills south of the village. This was the third and highest section of the ride, reaching approximately 360 m. The climb followed a combination of gravel track and compacted earth, with surface water still present in places. Traction varied, particularly where the gradient steepened.
At the top, the route transitioned into the main descent phase. The ground conditions dictated a controlled approach. The surface alternated between firm sections where rain had consolidated the track, and loose or muddy sections where water had collected or recently drained away. Maximum speed reached 54.2 km/h, but only where visibility and surface stability allowed.
The final section returned through the familiar agricultural network above Kokkino Chorio, closing the loop across the same terraced landscape, now drying slowly under improving conditions.
The structure of the ride remained simple: three climbs, three descents, continuous movement across the hills.
The difference was the ground. After a week of rain, the terrain dictated the pace, the line choice, and the effort. The opportunity to ride came in a short weather window, and the route was taken as it was — wet, variable, and fully rideable.
A straightforward midweek social ride, timed correctly between the weather systems.

Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
