These new tires, unfortunately, feel slower than the old tires. They're definitely heavier than the old tires. I just don't get the same sensation of the bike shooting forward when I pedal and it’s making steep, punchy climbs feel harder.
I was even wondering if it's slower than the Stumpjumper now but it isn't. I need to take the Stumpy on the same loop but it only feels marginally faster than the Stumpy even though it has much burlier and stickier tires. I really don't know what's going on.
I'm not liking the heavier casing. The ride is harsher and I think it's causing me to have more lockups and skids that I don't normally have on descents because the tire isn't conforming to the trail as well, despite my putting more weight over the rear.
Whatever is causing me to feel slower, I think it's also affecting how I climb steep bits because I'm fighting the bike more and it's causing me to yank on the bars more. So instead of going straight, I sometimes take myself offline which is bad on some of the narrow singletrack on this route.
I do feel like it does much better on loose over hard, marbley, ball bearing, gravel. The bottom of both Sheep Camp descent sections are good examples of it. Before it felt like I was floating over it and now it feels like I'm digging into it.
I have not ridden Cracker (I think it used to be called Poison Oak Alley) in years and I decided to go back now that either trails that seemed a little too hard feel easier now. It was pretty nice.
I also skipped Bottom Clencher to try the longer northern loop of Sugarloaf Mtn. that reconnects to Boost. It was pretty nice too. I think would take Boost if I was doing that trail so I wouldn't have to hike-a-bike back up to take Marchetti Trail.
