The ride covered 39.5 km with 831 m of ascent and 833 m of descent, following a rolling profile of repeated climbs and descents across the hills of the Apokoronas before a sustained final climb back towards Kokkino Chorio. Moving time totalled 2:28:03, with an ascent time of 1:18:14 and descent time of 1:07:19. Gradients reached +24.9% on the steepest climbs and -17.2% on the descents. Maximum speed recorded was 46.9 km/h, averaging 16.0 km/h across a mixture of tarmac lanes, concrete farm roads, compact earth, loose limestone and agricultural tracks. Off-road 70%. It was a stepped route built around a series of short, sharp efforts rather than a single sustained climb—nothing hidden, nothing wasted.

Historical Theme: The Egyptian Census of 1834 and a Lost Crete
Today's ride passes through villages that were recorded during the first systematic census of Crete, undertaken in 1834 during the Egyptian administration of the island under Muhammad Ali.
The census survives through the work of Robert Pashley, the English traveller and scholar whose Travels in Crete was published in 1837. Pashley was not conducting the census himself. Rather, he drew upon official returns and local administrative records available during his travels. What makes his work valuable is that it provides a snapshot of Crete before the major political and demographic changes of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries transformed the island.
Pashley was interested in far more than ancient ruins and classical history. He recorded population, religion, agriculture, administration, roads, trade, water sources and settlement patterns. In modern terms, he was documenting how Crete functioned as a living society.
The villages through which today's route passes were already established communities when the census was taken.
Kokkino Chorio was recorded as containing forty Christian families and no Muslim families.
Aspro, listed under the name Koprána, contained five Christian families and six Muslim families.
Gavalochori contained ten Christian families and twenty Muslim families.
Tsivaras contained sixteen Christian families and four Muslim families.
Armeni was one of the largest settlements in the area, with sixty Christian families and fifteen Muslim families.
Stylos was surprisingly small, with five Christian families and one Muslim family.
Kalyves was another major settlement, with fifty Christian families and twenty Muslim families.
Even allowing for the limitations of nineteenth-century record keeping, the figures reveal a landscape very different from the one we see today.
Several observations stand out immediately.
First, many villages were mixed communities. Christians and Muslims often lived in the same settlements, worked the same agricultural land and drew water from the same wells. The demographic picture was far more complex than modern assumptions might suggest.
Second, water appears to have been a major factor in settlement size. Armeni, Kalyves and the wider Kiliaris valley all benefited from reliable water supplies and supported larger populations. Villages with fewer water resources tended to remain smaller.
Third, the census records communities that were organised around agriculture rather than modern transport routes. People settled where there was water, cultivable land and security. The modern road network did not yet exist.
The figures alone tell only part of the story. Throughout his travels, Pashley was concerned not simply with how many people lived in a settlement, but why they lived there. He repeatedly linked population to practical considerations such as water supply, agricultural productivity, security and communications. In doing so, he was documenting the relationship between people and the landscape upon which their survival depended.
For the inhabitants of nineteenth-century Crete, access to water was often the single most important factor determining where a settlement could exist and how large it could become. Springs, wells and seasonal watercourses supported households, livestock and agriculture. Villages such as Armeni and Kalyves benefited from access to the water systems associated with the Kiliaris valley, allowing larger populations to be sustained. Even today, the importance of these water sources remains evident in the fertile agricultural land surrounding them.
Agricultural productivity was equally important. The census was undertaken for administrative and taxation purposes and therefore reflected communities whose livelihoods were closely tied to the land. Olive groves, vineyards, cereal crops and grazing areas formed the economic foundation of village life. Population was not distributed evenly across the landscape. Families settled where the land could support them. The larger villages generally occupied areas with greater access to cultivable ground, while smaller settlements often relied upon more limited local resources.
Security also played a significant role. Long before the construction of modern roads, many Cretan villages developed in locations that provided some degree of protection from external threats. Elevated positions, defensible terrain and clear views of surrounding approaches were often preferred. Kokkino Chorio, for example, occupies higher ground overlooking the surrounding countryside and the approaches to Souda Bay. Such locations offered practical advantages during periods of uncertainty, which were a recurring feature of Cretan history.
Communication and access to markets formed the fourth element. Villages did not exist in isolation. They were connected by tracks, mule routes and local trading networks that linked the coast with the interior. Agricultural produce, livestock and supplies moved between settlements along routes that often pre-date modern roads by centuries. Some of the tracks we ride today follow lines that would have been familiar to the people recorded in the 1834 census.
When viewed in this context, the census becomes far more than a list of names and numbers. It provides a glimpse into a functioning landscape in which settlements, wells, springs, terraces, olive groves, grazing land and communication routes formed an interconnected system. Each village occupied a place within that system, and its size was often a reflection of the resources available to it.
This perspective also helps explain why some settlements prospered while others remained small. Armeni and Kalyves emerged as major communities because they occupied favourable positions within the landscape, combining access to water, productive land and communications. Smaller settlements such as Aspro and Stylos survived because they were connected to the same wider network, even if they could not support large populations themselves.
The most striking question raised by the census is what happened to the Muslim population.
In 1834, Muslim families were present in most of the villages recorded by Pashley. Today they are largely absent.
The answer lies in the turbulent history of nineteenth-century Crete.
Following the Ottoman conquest, a Muslim population developed on the island through a combination of Ottoman settlement and local conversion to Islam. Many Cretan Muslims spoke Greek as their first language and were culturally similar to their Christian neighbours.
Throughout the nineteenth century, Crete experienced repeated revolts against Ottoman rule. Uprisings in 1821, 1841, 1866, 1878, 1889 and 1897 gradually increased tension between Christian and Muslim communities. Some Muslim families emigrated after each disturbance. Others moved into larger towns for protection.
The decisive turning point came during the crisis of 1897–1898. Following international intervention and the collapse of effective Ottoman control, Crete became an autonomous state. Large numbers of Muslims chose or were compelled to leave the island, relocating to other parts of the Ottoman Empire, including Anatolia, Rhodes, Syria and Egypt.
The process continued after union with Greece in 1913 and reached its conclusion following the population exchanges associated with the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. By then, the demographic character of many Cretan villages had been transformed.
As we ride through Apokoronas today, the churches, terraces, wells, olive groves and field systems remain. Much of the physical landscape that Pashley observed is still visible. What has changed are many of the people who once lived here.
The value of Pashley's census is that it preserves evidence of a Crete that no longer exists. It reminds us that the villages through which we ride have experienced centuries of migration, conflict, adaptation and change. The landscape endures, but the communities that inhabited it have evolved over time.
Nearly two hundred years after the census was compiled, the route offers an opportunity to look beyond the modern villages and consider the lives of those families—Christian and Muslim alike—whose names and numbers were first recorded in the Egyptian census of 1834. The roads may be different, the vehicles faster and the population larger, but the springs still emerge from the hillsides, the olive groves still occupy the terraces and the villages still stand where earlier generations established them. In that respect, the census reveals not only how people lived in 1834, but also how strongly the landscape itself has influenced the development of Apokoronas across the centuries.
During today's ride I also examined a substantial concrete military structure located on the cliff edge above Kalyves. The design and construction suggest a German wartime origin, possibly connected with coastal observation or defence. Further research is being undertaken using wartime aerial photography, occupation records and post-war intelligence mapping before any firm conclusions are drawn.
