The ride covered 32.3 km with 712 m of ascent and 713 m of descent, set along a rolling ridge-and-valley profile that continually gained and lost height across the hills of Apokóronas. Moving time totalled 2:02:58, with an ascent time of 1:18:17 and descent in 0:43:12. Gradients reached +23.6% on the steeper sections and –21.5% on the way down. Maximum speed recorded was 53.5 km/h, averaging 15.8 km/h across compact dirt tracks, embedded limestone, loose stone, agricultural roads, forest tracks and short tarmac connectors, with 55% off-road. It was a stepped route rather than a simple climb-and-return. The terrain dictated the pace throughout. Nothing hidden. Nothing wasted. The route was the route.

While re-reading The Cretan Runner by George Psychoundakis, I was struck by how familiar many of his observations seemed. George was born in Asi Gonia and spent the occupation carrying messages across some of the most difficult mountain terrain in Crete. Again and again, he describes journeys that appear simple on a map but become something entirely different once undertaken on the ground.
Modern E-MTB riding is obviously very different from wartime courier work, but the underlying lesson remains the same. Maps provide possibilities. The ground determines reality.
George was not navigating from a map alone. He had to understand which paths were passable, which routes were fastest, which routes were safest, which routes avoided observation, where water could be found, which ridges could be crossed, which valleys became dead ends, how weather changed movement, and how long a journey would actually take on foot.
I have to do all the above. Why, I hear you ask? Because the map does not tell the whole story. The tracks and ridge lines marked on a map do not guarantee that anything is rideable or even walkable.
A digital map may show a continuous track between two points. On the ground, that same track may be blocked by winter erosion, overgrown vegetation, loose rock, fallen trees, damaged walls, locked gates, or gradients that are technically possible but unsuitable for a group ride. Equally, a route that appears insignificant on a map may prove to be the easiest and most efficient way through the landscape.
Every ride I plan begins with maps, satellite imagery, and local knowledge. The real planning begins when tyres touch the ground. Only then do you discover what the map cannot tell you.
The photographs taken during the ride illustrate another point that George Psychoundakis understood instinctively. Tracks that appear straightforward on a map rarely appear quite so straightforward when viewed on the ground. Surface condition, loose stone, vegetation, drainage channels, visibility around bends and the steepness of short sections all influence movement. A route that appears to be a simple line between two points on a map becomes a series of decisions once tyres or boots touch the ground. The map may suggest the route, but the ground determines how it is travelled.
Re-reading The Cretan Runner, I noted how often George Psychoundakis encountered the same problem. Distances that appear modest on a map became long and demanding journeys once terrain, weather, darkness, enemy activity, and physical endurance were taken into account. The landscape imposed its own rules.
When planning rides, I often discover that a route which appears straightforward on a digital map is slower, steeper, rougher, or more complicated than expected. Equally, tracks that appear insignificant on a map can prove to be the most efficient way through the landscape.
George Psychoundakis learned this lesson carrying messages for the resistance. Every rider who spends enough time exploring the mountains of Crete eventually learns the same lesson. The route is the route.
During our ride through the mountains above Asi Gonia on 19 April, I found myself riding across the very ground that shaped George's understanding of movement. Long before he became known as The Cretan Runner, these mountains taught him lessons that every rider, walker, soldier, shepherd, and courier eventually learns. The map suggests possibilities. The ground determines reality.
The connection is particularly strong because our ride passed through the landscape that formed Psychoundakis's understanding of movement, distance, and terrain long before he became known as "The Cretan Runner."
That gives a direct geographical link, not just a literary one. The terrain we were riding is the terrain that taught George how to move across Crete.
The lesson remains as true today as it was during the occupation. A route that appears straightforward on a map may require far more time, effort, and judgement once the realities of the ground are taken into account. The route is the route, and the ground determines the speed.
The same process that teaches a rider about movement also teaches him about the landscape through which he is travelling. Cover enough kilometres over enough years and patterns begin to emerge. Tracks change. Villages change. Farming practices change. Water sources appear and disappear. Some observations are obvious. Others only become noticeable after repeatedly passing through the same places in different seasons and different years.
Yet movement through a landscape does more than teach us about routes. Over time, it also teaches us about the place itself.
What I Am Seeing in Apokóronas
Living in a place and travelling through it are not the same thing.
Different people experience Apokóronas in different ways.
Each perspective reveals something different about the area.
My own perspective comes from travelling through Apokóronas by E-MTB several times each week. Over time, this has given me opportunities to observe the landscape, villages, tracks and seasonal rhythms of the district from a particular point of view.
They are not conclusions. They are simply things I have noticed while moving through the landscape.
Some changes are obvious.
There are more villas than there were twenty years ago. Construction continues in areas that were once agricultural land. During the summer months there are more hire cars on village roads and more visitors on the coast.
Other changes are less obvious.
Water has become a frequent topic of conversation. During coffee stops and conversations in villages, rainfall, wells, springs and irrigation are discussed more often than I remember from previous years. Whether these concerns represent a short-term cycle or a longer-term trend remains to be seen, but water is increasingly part of the conversation.
The countryside is changing in other ways.
Some olive groves remain well maintained. Others show signs of abandonment. Stone terraces built by previous generations continue to hold the hillsides together, but many receive less attention than they once did. Tracks that were originally created for agriculture are now used as much by walkers, cyclists and visitors as by farmers.
Tourism continues to shape the region.
Many local businesses depend upon it and benefit from it. Restaurants, cafés, accommodation providers and service industries all rely upon the visitor economy. At the same time, increased visitor numbers place additional demands upon roads, parking, water supplies and local infrastructure. Conversations at my regular coffee stops suggest that many local people recognise both the benefits and the pressures that tourism brings.
There are also signs of investment.
Road surfaces improve in some areas. Healthcare facilities are being upgraded. Public buildings receive renovation. New projects appear, often funded through a combination of Greek and European programmes.
Yet despite these changes, much remains recognisably the same.
The olive harvest still dominates the agricultural calendar. Village squares remain social centres. Church festivals continue to mark the seasons. The hills remain a working landscape. One noticeable change, however, is how people move through it. When I first arrived in Crete, it was not uncommon to see farmers and shepherds using donkeys. Today, most travel by four-wheel-drive vehicles. As a result, tracks and remote areas that were once reached mainly on foot or by animal are now more accessible than they were a generation ago.
History remains visible in the landscape.
Venetian wells, Ottoman buildings, Second World War sites and older archaeological remains continue to sit alongside modern development. In Apokóronas, the past is rarely far away.
The question is not whether the area is changing. It always has.
The more interesting question is which changes will prove temporary and which will shape the next generation.
From what I see on the ground, roads, airports and buildings will attract attention because they are visible. Water may prove to be the more important story because it affects almost everything else.
That is what I am seeing in Apokóronas today.
