The ride covered 33.3 km with 850 m of ascent and 870 m of descent, set along a rolling profile comprising an initial ridge climb, a central basin of repeated short climbs and descents, and a return to the higher ground before the final descent towards Kokkino Chorio. Moving time totalled 2:09:05, with an ascent time of 1:20:53 and descent in 0:45:38. Gradients reached +17.8% on the steepest climbs and –7.3% on the way down. Maximum speed recorded was 55.9 km/h, averaging 15.5 km/h across sealed village roads, concrete agricultural lanes, rough farm tracks, loose stone and hard-packed dirt. The route was 45% off-road. It was a stepped route built around a series of short efforts rather than one continuous climb, requiring repeated changes of pace and line choice throughout the basin section.

The route began in Kokkino Chorio before climbing towards Drapanos and the first sustained climb of the morning. The early kilometres followed roads that most visitors would recognise as ordinary village connections. They are used daily by residents, delivery vehicles and agricultural traffic. Yet beneath the modern surface lies a much older logic.
Roads in Crete rarely exist by accident.
Some follow ancient movement corridors. Others follow Ottoman tracks, mule paths, agricultural access routes or military roads. During the Battle of Crete and the occupation that followed, soldiers, resistance fighters, messengers, shepherds and civilians were all constrained by the same physical landscape. Modern engineering may have widened certain sections and altered others, but the ground itself has not changed.
The first ridge section demonstrated this clearly. The climb gained height steadily rather than directly. Looking at the map, a straighter route appears possible. On the ground, however, the folds of the terrain quickly explain why the road follows its present course. Gullies, drainage lines and steep-sided slopes limit movement. The route taken by the modern road remains the most efficient way through the landscape.
After reaching the higher ground, the ride entered the central basin between approximately kilometre ten and kilometre twenty-three. This was the defining section of the day.
The profile suggests easy riding. The reality is quite different.
The basin repeatedly removes hard-earned elevation and then demands it back again. None of the individual climbs are particularly long, but together they create a pattern of continual effort. One short rise follows another. Descents provide little opportunity for recovery before the next climb begins.
This characteristic may help explain why movement through this part of Apokoronas has historically followed certain routes while avoiding others. Looking at wartime maps, there is often a temptation to draw direct lines between locations. Riding the ground shows why those lines rarely worked in practice.
A valley may appear open from a map.
A ridge may appear insignificant.
A short distance may appear straightforward.
On the ground, each of those assumptions can prove false.
The ride therefore became less about cycling and more about observing how terrain continues to influence movement. The modern road network overlays older patterns but does not entirely replace them. Again and again, roads, tracks and lanes converged upon the same natural corridors before diverging once more. In several places, abandoned agricultural tracks remained visible beside newer roads, both following essentially the same line through the landscape.
The strongest example came during the sequence of climbs around Kalamitsi Alexandrou.
The road climbed through a narrow corridor bounded by steeper slopes on either side. There was no practical shortcut. Any attempt to leave the established route immediately encountered unfavourable ground. The modern road exists there because that is where movement remains easiest.
The same principle appeared repeatedly during the occupation.
German patrols used roads where available but often relied on the same tracks and pathways used by local inhabitants. Resistance fighters frequently avoided roads where possible, yet even they remained subject to the realities of the terrain. Safe movement required knowledge of folds, ridges, cover, water sources and crossing points. Freedom of movement was never absolute. It was negotiated continuously with the landscape itself.
The lowest section of the route brought the ride close to the river corridor before the steepest climbs of the day began. Climb C6 reached a maximum gradient of 17.8%, while Climb C8 averaged more than ten percent for almost a kilometre. These were not long alpine ascents but short, concentrated efforts demanding attention and steady power.
From a military perspective, such climbs matter.
A ten-percent gradient affects vehicles.
A fifteen-percent gradient affects pack animals.
An eighteen-percent gradient affects everyone.
The practical consequences become obvious when riding them.
As the route regained the higher ground, views opened towards the White Mountains. Even in summer, the relationship between mountains, valleys and settlements remains obvious. Villages occupy ground where access, water and agriculture combine successfully. Roads connect them using routes permitted by the terrain rather than imposed upon it.
The final sequence of climbs near the thirty-kilometre mark provided a fitting conclusion. None were individually dramatic, but together they reinforced the lesson repeated throughout the ride. Distance alone tells very little about effort. The shape of the ground remains the determining factor.
The descent back towards Kokkino Chorio followed one of the faster sections of the route, with speeds approaching 56 km/h. Even here, the line of travel reflected terrain rather than preference. The road curved where slopes dictated, crossed contours where practical and avoided ground that would have required substantially greater engineering effort.
By the end of the ride, the title seemed justified.
There is no short way across this part of Apokoronas.
Modern roads may conceal the age of the movement corridors beneath them, but they do not erase them. The same ridges, valleys and drainage lines that influenced shepherds, traders, soldiers and resistance fighters continue to influence movement today. The surface has changed. The vehicles have changed. The purpose of the journey has changed.
The ground has not.
And because the ground has not changed, many of the movement corridors used during the Battle of Crete and the occupation remain visible to anyone willing to leave the map behind and travel through the landscape itself.
