Today I reached my goal!
I woke up at my campsite up on the hill above Wakkanai. Since I'm still recovering from the big hike, my calves are still sore and I think I've been sleeping in more than usual. I probably woke up somewhere between 6 and 7, despite leaving my outer shell open and being exposed to the sun. I did briefly wake up around 4:15 for sunrise though, which was beautiful.
I took my time packing up and leaving town. I ate at the campsite, then ate at the Lawson, then are at Macca's. By the time I was really leaving town it was after 9.
Today I stuck to the coast and faced headwind all day. For what was a nice flat ride, I was going incredibly slowly. I guess you can't have it easy!
At around midday I reached the northernmost point of Japan, Cape Soya. I liked up for my pictures, got my souvenirs and had a brief call with Steph. Despite going on a Tuesday, it was still incredibly packed and the line to take a photo with the monument took about 10 minutes. It was kinda cute, everybody would get the person behind them in the line to take their photo. I used my camera on a tripod though.
I walked up the stairs to the hill just above and there were about 8 deers with antlers just chilling. They didn't seem to care if you went right up to them, so I took some shots with my camera. I then dodged all the deer poop on the ground to get to the bench and sat with my vending machine coffee. After that I got a sashimi bowl for lunch. Getting a little sick of sashimi now, it's all I can have at these restaurants. I hate to say it, but I miss my Joyfull and Gusto sometimes...
From there I figured there's no point hanging around anymore. I was less emotional hitting my target than I expected, but I guess I'm not sure what I expected. It's really all about the journey not the destination, and my journey isn't over just yet.
I continued down the coast and the wind only got worse. I made it to the campsite at 5:30, right on the dot when reception was supposed to close. They already had the blinds up and nobody there.. So I backtracked 2km to the convenience store, got dinner, and set my tent up in a random field next to the high way as the last of the sunlight was disappearing. By now the weather has gone from sunny and windy, to overcast and feeling like I was in the clouds. Everything is slowly getting wet, but no rain.
So, big milestone today! My bike now has a sticker on it from the southernmost cape, and a sticker from the northernmost cape. I think that's super cool.
