The morning started abruptly at something like 5am when an insanely loud disposal service vehicle (garbage truck) roared into the RV park we were staying at alongside the Salmon River to collect it’s daily offerings. Don’t worry I’ve added it to the list of things to fix when I rule the world.. After packing up the bikes we headed back towards town (opposite the direction we were going) to drop by the post office and pick up supplies. It was with great disappointment that we were going to roll past the Odd Fellows Bakery as we had discovered the day before that they were closed on Sundays and Mondays, they have some of the BEST chocolate croissants and Americano’s. As we approached the bakery a man wearing an apron appeared from the bakery’s door and started motioning towards us as we passed. “Come on in and grab some free pastries and coffee!” No, I wasn’t dreaming. As it turns out they have recently began a ‘donations only’ come in and grab free bakery items on Sundays and Mondays and even offer free coffee. Turns out the bakery dude also had done some bikepacking and even offered to make us Americano’s, which we quickly accepted. We did leave a donation that covered all of the coffee and gems we consumed! After collecting our goodies from the PO we rolled north on Hwy 93 towards the Lost Trail pass which awaited us 33 miles ahead. It was particularly beautiful all morning and we had a slight tailwind to boot. The climb was long, about 9 miles but with just over 2,000ft of elevation gain it wasn’t anything like some of the ascents that were behind us. Once up and over the climb we realized we had made great time, possibly due to the tailwind, and continued passed our planned stop to the Fluffy Butt Hutt Bakery (a local favorite) and onto Darby where we opted for a cozy room at the Mountain Spirit Inn. In the lobby we were greeted by Amy, a 6 month old kitty who demanded my attention the entire time were were checking in.
