Today was the last ride for the Fun Under the Sun competition. I decided to go the extra mile. The weather is ideal. About 70 degrees, winds from the North West, but mild when I got out. I wore the standard summer kit with a thick base layer. The legs felt good to start. I stopped at the mail lockers to stash a water bottle. I made it to the summit of the descent in good time. I cruised the downhill. There was some traffic mitigation, so I let the cars by as I was descending. I put it two digs on the risers. I reached the base in good time. After I made it there, I headed back without hesitation. The climbing legs settled in quick. The landmarks went by and I was in the zone most of the way up. I did in and out of the saddle efforts to keep the legs fresh and momentum going. The morale felt better after reaching the first dip. I was listening to my music, it helped keep me distracted. I kept the power down going over the top. I was near max when I got there. After cresting the summit, I took a few moments to recover and then headed down WTR. I grabbed the water bottle at the lockers and made my way to OTR. The legs were warm, so it didn't take much time to get settled in. After reaching the top, I decided to add the Buffalo Run. My goal was to reach 30 miles. After zipping around the Buffalo neighborhood, I headed back to OTR. Descending off OTR was relaxing. I stopped once to take photos of the local deer that were grazing in a field. As I was making my way back, I realized that I was not going to reach 30 miles. So, I added a small segment by going to White Pine by way of Mariposa. That added about a mile or so. I put in the dig to the top of Weston. The GPS read about 29.5-ish miles, so I did a lap around the neighborhood. The mileage eclipsed 30 miles. My goal was met, so I stopped there.
Concentration was good. I was a bit impatient to reach the base of Keene, but not so much. Balance and form was good. Ailments were minimal. Some hand soreness and the sensation of exhaustion from the efforts. Nutrition was good. I had a bowl of oatmeal, half a banana, and some grapes before departing. I drank all of my sport drink and half my water. Interesting, I didn't need to feed on this ride. Gear worked flawlessly. I charged the Di2 for a few minutes before departing as it was low on batteries. Other notes, I saw three cyclists today.
