Roads were a bit wet and just a few sprinkles. Same issue with shifter although at start it seemed easier to shift. So maybe it was more weakness in my hand. I know later in day it was bad again. I had left the fenders on.
It was a long ride down to Geneva for the first main stop. It was gorgeous by the finger lake of Seneca Lake, Then we rode around north edge and down the center spine. At Ovid, mi 70.3, I needed a break. Stopped at McDonalds. Sat there for too long 25 min.
Eventually got down to Taughannook Falls SP. In this area I started leap frog with a few other bikers. 1 was from out of country and had his family along that showed up at the controls. Cute. Another was a Japanese cyclist.
Just before Watkins Glen at mi 110 was Hector Falls. I had a bit of a challenge finding the control info for the info control. Yes Peter D, the organizer had us use a paper control card for ride verification, so a few were info controls. This one was how many tons were loaded onto a barge here. 60 tons! amazing and sent down to NYC by Erie Canal.
Then around to south end of Seneca Lake to Watkins Glen, birthplace of motor racing. Nice place. Stopped here at the Cannoli House, just a house with a room in which they were making cannolis, mi 113.0. I was a bit surprised here as I passed a group of riders that were hanging out resting, so I thought I had gotten ahead of them. Then it became clear that I had a 2.5 out and 2.5 mile back to do that they had already completed. So , I was 5 miles behind them. Here on the back, I noticed a tandem and a single rider with them.
Then a 5.3 mile climb up out of Watkins Glenn. Nice road, not much traffic. Turns out the tandem passed me right near the top of this climb! I then hung on a bit until I let up as we approached a down hill and the tandem was gone, at over 40 mph.
Caught them at next rest area at Penn Yan mi 146.1. Got out of that rest area before tandem and single follower as I was trying to beat them up the climb out of that valley so I could hang onto the tandem for a bit. Well I made it about 10 miles before they caught me. By then it was getting dark and the trailing single rider to the tandem had such a bright light that I could not follow him safely and see the road. SO I gave up on the tandem. Oh well.
Now as we were further west of Seneca Lake, I really believed we were on the same road and headed again to Geneva! That perturbed me that we would use the same route. Then we rode into a sort of big town on Canadauiga, which I did not recognize, but I thought it was just an extension of Geneva! Boy I was so confused.
Here I passed the tandem group. Again I made it 15 miles before they caught me on the last stretch into Webster.
Nice day of cycling. Nice roads, small town. Lots of waterfalls. Turns out I was completely wrong and we did not repeat roads.
