I lucked out today. I wanted to do the triple ride but I didn't know what time I was going to be able to get out the door. Fortunately today was comfortable. Low 80's with a cool breeze from the North West. The idea was to do each segment of the ride contingent on how my body was feeling. I did modest tempo for the first hour of the ride. The serious part of the ride started as I was making my back from Willow Springs. There was a significant headwind at that time. I paced myself accordingly. Keeping my tempo well within my limits. I put some effort on the last few kickers but just as quick, got back into my moderate tempo. Banducci was the second most difficult part of the ride. There's very little getting around ascending the Banducci wall. I had no choice but to burn a match on that short segment. After that I did moderate tempo to the summit. After that, it was mostly fun and games on the downhill. I road across the valley with caution, as usual. Paying equal attention to the traffic and my pace. I was feeling good, but I knew there were tough sections to come. I took my time up the rear SS entrance. I was able to recover on the descent and flats. I made a (planned) stop at the quickie mart. I got some drinks. Unfortunately, I bought what appeared to be water, ending up being sprite soda. I also bought a bottle of gatorade. I ended up drinking half the soda and poured the remainder of the gatorade into the second bottle. So, at that point I had only 1 and 1/2 bottles of fluid till I reached the mailboxes near home. I crossed the valley (on the return) with more of the same pace. Moderate, with no significant increase in tempo. I had a nice tailwind at this point. When I reached the CVR climb, I stopped, had my power bar and continued the ride. Just as I was about to crest the climb, I noticed that my front tire was low. It was a flat and I ended up fixing it shortly after the summit. The new pump worked. Not great, but kept me on the road. I probably could have expended 1 more CO2 cartridge. Nevertheless, I continued and had no other issues. When I got back to the mail box, I swapped my bottles, camera batteries and commenced the ride. I was feeling pretty good at this point. Making my way up to the WTR summit felt like my other rides, with a hint of more fatigue in the legs. I was able to get a good recovery on the descent. After reaching the base, I did the usual U-ee and started the climb. I kept the tempo moderate. Again, no harsh accelerations. My legs were with me for the first half. After that, I was riding into the pain zone. My legs were getting fatigued and I was running low on fluids. I could have used 1 more bottle. I was counting the minutes when I was a couple miles from the summit. I didn't know how close I was going to be from consuming my bottles. Fortunately, I made it with a few gulps to spare. Still, I could have used an extra bottle. From that point on, it was cruising till I reached home. Concentration was real good today. I was able to keep my mind in perspective. How much I wanted to put into the approaching miles and what I should have left for the later parts. Balance and form was good, but I felt it could be better. Ailments were very modest. Some minor aches here and there in the legs, but nothing a slight adjustment couldn't fix. Gear is working great. Aside from the flat. The pump did its job. My front light ran out somewhere on the last 1/3 of the ride. The Gopro worked great. Other notes. I didn't stretch as much as I should have. I got lucky that I didn't have any issues. Something to keep in mind for the next ride. I saw 3 or 4 cyclists today. One of which I passed on the ascent up Highline (coming back). Then he passsed me on the descent. I was hoping he was going the same way I was, but he made a right where I went up the Banducci wall. The mailbox bottle system seems to be working. I have to see if I can sneak in a small water bottle so that I can chug it down just before commencing.
