I don't know how we got it so wrong but it was sunset right as we started the Morgan Territory descent! Then we had some navigation errors and we weren't completely sure how to get back to the car.
As soon as the sun set, the temperature dropped dramatically. It took us another hour and a half to get back from that point (including navigation stops). On the drive home, I couldn't stop shivering until I was crossing the San Mateo Bridge.
The day started off great. The weather said it would stop raining by the time we started and it had. No need for rain gear. It was windy and sometimes cold, sometimes hot. Super hard to predict what to wear. Mostly I was fine except for the end.
Surprisingly, I started getting hungry at around mile 14 and we ended up stopping twice to snack since lunch wasn't until mile 65-ish. There was an opportunity get donuts early on and I didn't do it. Such a fool!
I gotta say, I didn't enjoy climbing Three Bears (Bear Creek?). I think it might have been the colder temps and not enough food but I was starting to get tired.
We had planned to go to Krispy Kreme on the way to lunch but they were closed for remodeling and only had drive through which was lame. And we didn't realize that we didn't have lunch until around 3p and we still had a ways to go.
I was hoping lunch would make me feel better but on the way to Morgan Territory, I did not want to do anymore climbing. I was dreading it. At the start, I was lagging behind. At one point I stopped to pee and had to catch up. I think that helped me because I ended up going over the top of Bob and hammering up a climb to catch Sonny and then just kept on going.
Sonny was staying with me for a while and then I just hit the gas again. I think I was riding angry. I don't like Morgan Territory. The road is so bad and the climbing is steep. It's just not a lot of fun. On one of the later steep pitches, I went to downshift to my lowest gear and the chain popped off on the inside. Luckily I didn't destroy anything. I put the chain back on and start pedaling and it went back inside. So frustrating. It's never happened before. I shifted gears but by then, Sonny had already caught back up.
I was deflated and we just climbed the rest of it together. At the top, we waited for Bob where it was freezing. We were worried about the crosswinds on the descent but it wasn't bad. I stopped at one point to get pics of Sonny and Bob with the sunset. I waited for a while for Bob but managed to catch back up to Sonny afterward. So much fun!
After that was were the fun began. Trying to find our way back in the dark. At least we all had lights. And the nice flat spin back helped my legs actually.
Pretty epic day.
UPDATE - Mystery solved. Bob didn't realize he had routed dirt through Morgan Territory instead of road making the ride appear about 10mi./1000' shorter than it actually was. And also why the Garmin appeared to be misdirecting us.
We had planned a longer route but luckily decided to go with the slightly shorter one.
