So many pine trees. Countless fields of blueberries. So many miles of washboard dirt road. Sand. Holes. Tracks left by atvs doing donuts. These are some of the many things I encountered on this ride.
I camped dry by the Altamaha so I needed water and soon enough at the first church I saw I was able to fill up with their well water. Felt pretty good till about noon and had to take a break. This lasted for awhile till I stopped at another church around 2 and sat at a picnic table and read for a little while. Topped off my bottles here as well and felt much better from the afternoon on. Lately becoming a pattern, I feel not so great in the morning but really good in the afternoon and evening. Weird cause normally I am a morning person.
I meant to stop in Alma but somehow blew right by the Dollar General. I was feeling ok so I decided to push on to the ultimate goal for the day, to reach the little "town" of Dixie Union which also has a Dollar General. As soon as I was inside Ware County I turned onto a long, straight dirt road that lasted for 7 miles. It hadn't been maintained in yesrs and had holes everywhere. It contained not a single foot of elevation gain but it was all I could do to keep my teeth in my head while trying to maintain 10mph. Part of it was that of course I was just ready for the day to be over and here I had to contend with an unmaintained B road. I followed the Railroad for miles and got to see a really long train go by. Then I had to use the railroad tracks to go around a hole, no, a pond that took the road with it. Eventually this ended. I fueled up at the DG and ate a quick snack and began the search for an obscure family cemetery. I know it exists because my grandfather took me there when I was 3. Maps have been little help and so I only had a few guesses. I walked all around the woods and by a field where it's supposed to be but ultimately ran out of both daylight and energy. So I continued on down the road a ways to a church with another great grandfather, by the Satilla river and finally set my tent up after my longest day yet.
