Day started out great. I made my way lazily up to Fargo and, after getting some food from the DG I decided, since I was feeling great, to ride what must be Georgia's longest dead end road, to the state park in the Okefenokee Swamp. I arrived and charged my stuff while having lunch. I left and made it almost back to Fargo when I ran over a tiny bit of glass. Didn't think much of it until my tire went soft. I pulled over and patched the hole, or so I thought. It did hold for the two miles back to the DG again. I was running out of cement so I got some super glue. Long story short, yada yada yada, 5 hours later, three failed tubes, about 10 patches, two big blisters on my fingers, I finally, after the third patch on the third tube, I managed to get a fully inflated tire.
I was genuinely freaking out for awhile. About hour one into my ordeal the county sheriff came by to see how I was doing. Apparently word travels fast in a town like Fargo. It seems someone in town had trouble with somebody sleeping in the woods on their property and I guess I might have been suspected. I told him that I slept way down south in Florida the previous night, and he was very nice. Asked if I needed anything. Lots of people throughout my ordeal did. Of course I said I was good. While I was fumbling around a guy helped a woman with a flat on her truck, in the same parking lot, and he even had to make two trips, to get a jack, and to get a tire for her since she had neither.
So once I got the tire inflated finally, since I was really worried about how long it would last and how capable I would be to fix another puncture. A switch was flipped in my mind and I just took off north on US441 north out of Fargo. Saw a sign for 62 miles to Douglas, which I knew was the closest Walmart. I decided then and there to make a bee line for Douglas. Douglas wasn't even on my planned route. I was going to go around it. I was worried about the tire so i just rode the damn highway. Honestly it was late enough and rural enough that there was almost no traffic. And almost every car or truck gave me the full lane when passing. I was so single minded that I never allowed myself to look back, I rode to the left of the shoulder to avoid sharp things and just focused on the horizon. I wanted nothing more than to get the hell out of Clinch county and it took forever but I blew a kiss at the sign when I finally passed into Atkinson county. I was treated to one of the most awesome sunsets of my life just before Pearson. Thankfully I had plenty of food and water before leaving. I rode through dusk without using my headlight to save battery, and had my rear lights burning the whole time of course. The highway was busier after Pearson but it was 4 lane and I felt safe, safer than the 2 lane section. It took until just south of Douglas for a hill of any consequence to appear. I was flying, almost no wind and highway riding is just so fast. I made it to the Walmart by 9:30, after leaving Fargo around 6. They actually had tubes of the size I needed and I could finally relax a bit.
I had ridden there entirely on adrenaline and it was finally starting to wear off. Got a meager supper there and ate it in the parking lot.
Next problem was finding a place to camp. I was going to try to find a church but all the ones in town were surrounded by houses and well lit. I didn't want to go very far, fatigue was setting in. Initially found a small park with a covered picnic table area next to a pond with the loudest frog colony I have ever heard. But it was too well lit and surrounded by houses too. And I don't trust my ability to get going fast before the sunrise. So I moved to the very back of the city cemetery a block over. I found a spot hidden in the woods. As it happened a chicken processing plant bordered the cemetery and although I was as far away as I could be, it was still quite loud but thankfully white noise. And it smelled of chickens. But that just reminded me of home. Finally got to sleep a little bit before midnight.
Morals of today's story: don't ride with super bald tires. If you do, have plenty of sealant in them. Failing that, have several tubes that actually hold air. Check spare tubes before leaving. If they've been in the bottom of your bag for months rubbing against things, probably they should be replaced. Bring more than plenty of rubber cement and patches, it weighs almost nothing and takes up little space. And finally, don't panic. It took me so long mostly because I tried to rush.
