Today's subtitle = "Issues". Day began well-enough w/ an unusually clear Google-Maps route back from the hotel to basecamp, then it went seriously "downhill", even w/ some climbs still to handle. Ride with GPS route for day 5 file must have been corrupted & would not load. Just a street map of Princeton. I tried what a non-IT person could to salvage it, not going to work. All 6 other routes were fine. No time to try to reload while eating power up in the parking lot of the starting point. So I determined to follow pavement markings & CycleNC signs. Fine until left Clayton Rest Stop. Then a perhaps poorly marked turn that I was paying more attention to the red light & the heavy building rush-hour traffic, missed an apparent R turn, & suddenly found myself careening down a 9% hill w/ 1 lane on a major state highway under construction carrying 50-60mph trucks & cars w/ orange cones squeezing them VERY close to my L handlebar & shoulder & hip. Got the sense this would certainly not be on the route. Other side of the hill was the same, very narrow. Stopped at a wide spot at the bottom. Tons of nails, bolts, nuts, screws, jagged shards of glass & metal. Called SAG. They requested an address, 6+ X, NO street intersections if off-route. I told them no buildings around, 6+ X. Just a water treatment facility & the back of a school w/ no signs or names. Waited 25 minutes for a possible pick-up. Got brave to cross the highway. Rode into the school driveway. Called & gave them East Clayton Elementary School. Finally driver got there, & took me up the hill. Tediously turned around @ the hilltop to ensure the correct route & turn. Missed it, no signs seen. Back to the school lot, now being POURED rain on, even though ZERO green blobs on radar map near us (so it could've been worse if I was still there). SAG driver cross referenced the route between 2 phones & set in good old Google-Maps. Back up the hill. Turned L on route. Dropped me off after 50 yards where safe. Motored home w/ motivation to gain some time back. Able to stay mostly dry except some sprinkles. Only got lost one more time, but caught it quickly on the direct other side of the RR tracks, & it was b/c where the L turn pavement mark was, there was no confirmation pavement mark b/c it had been freshly paved over!? So much for an "EASY" day that included 35 miles of flat traffic-less Neuse River Trail Greenway. And lost about 3-5 miles on Garmin b/c I forgot to turn navigation back on right away after being put back onto the correct course safely.
