I slept fantastic last night and was so tired that I fell asleep before 9:30 without my earplugs, and slept soundly all night long till just before sunrise. The only real interruption was a train but I went right back to sleep after it passed. So as a result I felt recovered as I rolled out of the cemetery and back through Marion to the trail again.
I made a slight diversion to Fairmont to see James Dean's grave. He was born in Marion and was raised by his aunt and uncle on their farm near Fairmont. It took a bit of searching, even though I knew exactly where to look, I honestly expected more fanfare but other than a few small trinkets and flowers it was just as anonymous as all the other graves. I went through downtown Fairmont and it was clear the town had been cashing in on James Dean's legacy for the better part of nearly 70 years. It was a nice little town but I didn't need anything so I continued on.
I rode a series of back roads to the start of the Cardinal Greenway at Gaston. I got to Muncie soon and decided I needed a snack, tried the Aldi but that was a failure, I left without buying anything rather than wait 20 minutes in a long line for the one cashier. No self checkout. I rode over to some off brand Kroger owned store which was similarly busy but I got out in only a few minutes. The rest of the way through the city was frustrating as I could never get a rhythm, there were like a million street crossings and all of them had cars to wait for.
I finally left the city and the crossings were less frequent. I should have waited till Losantville as it had a Dollar General very close to the trail. I stopped and grabbed a couple snacks here anyway. It was warm enough that I enjoyed an ice cream Twix bar, and the wind was at my back. Although I was gradually climbing, I made pretty quick miles.
Eventually I reached the end of the trail in Richmond and headed due east towards Ohio. I crossed the state line on a tiny back road and there wasn't a welcome sign. So I rode a short distance to the state line on an old highway close by, and it also had nothing, not even a county line sign. All I got was a street sign called state line road. Oh well.
I rode the remaining miles through a lot of corn and soy fields on narrow paved roads with little traffic. The wind grew stronger as the day wore on, but still mostly a tailwind for me, from the WNW. I went through Eaton and into the state park, which was gated as apparently they close it to cars after October 15th. But there were tons of people who had parked at the gates and were walking around on the roads and trails. So it was a bit more nerve wracking than I would have liked to get to a secluded spot on the NW corner of the property away from a trail. But I made it without issue and found a decent spot. Not as perfect as yesterday but it will suffice.
