This was definitely an adventure-filled day!
(12 miles of this trip’s total was from where I stopped for dinner & my update last night.)
We got to sleep in the portico area of an activity center in Hoisington, and wake up to a beautiful 6am sunrise. Again I had an issue with my bike charging so stayed behind when the others left to charge a little more. Right off the bat, the google map I had set up rerouted me and I didn’t notice, sending me 10 miles north of my team so I was heading westward parallel to them but missing towns for water and food. I figured I had enough to be fine and I’m not opposed to stopping at a farmhouse and asking to use their spicket. THEN I hit the county line, and my highway turned into an unpaved road for 25 miles! I had to backtrack, then go south to the original route, adding 18 miles to my day. That gave me a tiny town with electricity in a park, and a larger town with food and water. In the park I dealt with my attitude. Back to the turtle, who do I believe is sovereign over my route? Who can put me in the right places at the right times with the right people? And I saw it over and over. Then at the bigger town, La Crosse, I stopped for a hamburger (and licorice😋) at the 4-way stop and again the challenge repeated itself as, during the 20 minutes I was in town, they closed my highway for the recovery of a section of windmill tube from an accident last week. They had brought in two huge crane trucks, counterweights, semi‘s etc, and were in the process of preparing the cranes to lift the tube (I was later told a couple hundred tons). We talked about route options and there was absolutely no other paved road. The couple hours it would be closed would get me to my destinations at dark IF everything went perfectly, so I had just settled on my most reasonable option which was stay in the little motel in town and take off about 5am. Just then, Caleb who had slipped away to the truck got out and told Gary, “If we load her up and you drive like hell we can get her through.” I said, “Did you get permission?!“ And he said “Yes, from my boss.” My bike fit perfectly, and Gary offered to take me further to McCracken, cutting off 16 of the 18 miles that had been added to my day!😁 It was fascinating to see. We had to stop and wait for the bobcat moving a huge counterweight to one of the crane rigs.
One of my favorite photos from today was on my nearing the camp, they old working windmill with the new ones behind, and the cattle coming down for their water. I stayed and watched a bit and two young men drove by in a pick up and stopped to hand me out this bottle of cold water, it was SO nice!!
It just turned out to be a tiring, amazing day, and a beautiful lakeside area to camp under a shelter. Supposed to be stormy tonight, and no Wi-Fi. Windy and hot tomorrow, really hot! So we are leaving at 5:45 AM.
Sweet dreams! ♥️terri
