I wanted to put in a big ride today. It was based on the wind conditions. The wind was from the North West. I was a bit undecided what to wear. I wore a thick base layer, my arm coolers, and knee warmers. The temperature was less than 70 degrees. I brought a third bottle that I stashed in the mail lockers. I made it to the summit of the Keene descent in good average time. I removed my knee warmers at that point. I cruised the downhill and put in two digs over the risers. I made it to the base in about 28 minutes. The temperature was warmer than I anticipated, I thought I was going to overheat with the thick base layers, but I was just sweating it out a bit. It wasn't uncomfortable or detracting. The landmarks went by fast. I was definitely in the zone. After making it to the summit, I was able to relax a bit. Assess things. The body felt good. Minimal signs of ailments. I made my way to the mail locker and grabbed the third bottle. I stashed my knee warmers at the same time. I then headed out to OTR. The legs were sufficiently warmed up. I stopped once at a porta-potty and then got back on the road. I was doing moderate tempo to the summit. I don't recall the time I posted, but it felt good average. The Banducci Wall felt good. Some traffic mitigation. But the legs felt responsive. After reaching The Alpine Forest, I was able to keep a steady tempo, breathing it out. I was near maximum over the top, but I felt strong. I made my way around the backside and then to the Banducci Summit. When I got there, I pulled over to feed and hydrate. The GoPro camera shut down sometime in the previous 30 minutes or so. I was keeping an eye on it. The battery level appeared to have stabilized. I didn't have any issues after that. Shortly after, I headed down the mountain. I pulled over once to let traffic by, then I was free to fly. I'm getting used to the rough tarmac. I have to adjust my speed by about 2 to 3 MPH less than usual. Otherwise, it's all the same. After reaching the base, I cruised my way to Pellisier. From this point on, I had a nice tailwind. I reached Boss Hogs in about 2:20-ish hours. The last climb felt real good. The legs didn't feel too heavy. I was doing no less than moderate tempo to the summit. When I reached the summit, I was able to relax. I was thinking about feeding, but I was good to go, no hunger signs. I got back to Route 202. There was road construction, so I was delayed by about 3 or 4 minutes. I had to negotiate traffic to get back to OTR. Once there, I was able to relax and enjoy the downhill. There was a car behind at one point that seemed content to stay behind. So, I put in a dig. The legs felt good, the speed was exhilarating. I pushed over Mariposa and then back to Weston. I shut it down at the top of the hill. Concentration was good. I had stuff to think about, and I was eager to put in a good ride. Nutrition was good. I fed 1 Clif Bar about 2 hours into the ride. I drank most of my Gatorade (2 bottles) and some water. Ailments were minimal. Some knee soreness. Calf soreness, quad fatigue. All mitigatable through stretching while on the bike. Balance and form felt good. Other notes, there were 3 riders at the summit of Keene as I was about to descend down the mountain.
