Bob wanted to do this loop today since we've gone around this time in the past and seen wildflowers. In fact, we did this ride basically the exact same day last year and it was really pretty.
As I had just done this ride three weeks ago with Melinda for her Four Peaks Farewell, I was missing her even more today.
We started late because Sonny had to make a big detour. It was a little chilly to start but it was supposed to be warm today. I hate agonizing over what to wear and how much to bring. I ended up dressed with the least layers to start and, as I predicted, as soon as we got to the base of Diablo, we took everything off as it was already pretty warm.
There was quite a big of traffic on the climb. And, for some more déjà vu, like Melinda three weeks before, Bob wasn't feeling great and faded towards the top. We even considered not doing Morgan Territory (again). I thought maybe it was the vaccine shot he got earlier in the week that had knocked him out of commission for a couple days.
By around noon, high clouds were rolling in that filtered the sun and some of the warmth. The sky was already gray on the way to lunch. BOO!
The creek flowing next to Morgan Territory Rd. was pretty sedate and much lower compared to three weeks ago. Bob announced he was going to do the climb at his own pace today - no Andy Camp - which I took to mean that I was free to fly. Legs felt pretty good but I was just shy of a PR. I'm not sure I actually started at the beginning of the segment though as I hadn't planned on going for it.
Towards the top, I could see and hear helicopters circling around. Seemed like they were searching for someone or something. When I got to the parking lot, there were quite a few fire department trucks of all kinds and a helicopter parked in the field. Next to it, a crowd of firefighters was surrounding someone being looked at. No idea what happened.
I think because of the cold we've been having, even though we've had plenty of rain, the cherry blossoms were just starting to bloom and the wildflowers were also just starting too.
Fortunately, the hills were still pretty green descending Morgan Territory. Unfortunately, with the cloud cover, there wasn't that golden hour glow. At least it wasn't cold like it was last time. And it wasn't as windy either.
