This was an adventure that I was not looking for... I was happy to finally get out during the day time but my body was a mess! I was sore but that was the least of my issues, both knees were in more pain and a different than normal, and my lower back was having these sharp pains that would drop me almost to my knees besides my other normal pains. I knew this was going to be a painful ride. I didn't realize how windy it was until I was out on the road. I was struggling right from the start, hoping I would feel better once I warmed up. After 2 miles I decided just to do 20 easy miles. I get to the Rte 70 in all kinds of pain and struggling. I noticed I was going so slow and in this much pain I had to get my mind to focus on something else, so I did! I was on the Tarmac Bike and it was riding so smooth, quiet with no clicking, it was a pleasure to be riding on! I focus ed on my riding position almost as aero as on the Tri/TT Bikes just with my elbows and hands further apart. I also focused on my pedaling and cadence. My speed and power output started to increased and the pains I felt was no difference. I decided to see how long I could last before I needed to shut everything down and limp back home... Now that my mind set was in a better place I accepted the pain that I was experiencing as part of the adventure. I started to notice I was riding a much faster than I had planned on. I figured it wasn't going to to last long but as long as it was happening I would work with it. I get to the turn around point and decided to go a little longer so followed my the normal route. I get to the next turn spot and decided while I was maintaining the speed and power to go further then turn around, which I did. I make the turn around and noticed, I was now going up a slight hill I like the speed I was riding at so worked to maintain it. It wasn't easy but I did and finally I'm back on the normal route. After 2 miles I'm back on Rte 70 heading towards Lakehurst. I decide that now I'm going to do 40 miles, I'm now in my "dream wonder world", still in immense pain! traffic was pretty heavy both ways wanted to make my turn around before the circle especially with this much traffic. The issue with this upcoming circle, you yield to traffic coming into the circle which that means you stop in the circle! Cars behind me would not be too happy because there's no way I could pull out fast enough. But because of the traffic behind me I was forced into the circle so I was forced to ramp up my speed to match the cars. I get to stopped cars I decided to take the inside lane. I see there was a gap between a car entering the circle and small gap to the next car but not big enough for the stopped car to pull out now I have enough speed to continue by the stopped cars and to jump behind the coming car and get to the outside lane to exit the circle. I basically had to do a sprint around the circle. I was able to accomplish this all and not slow up the traffic, I did it all with room to spare, I was out of the circle without any cars passing me, which surprised me. My worst fear was I would be into a head wind and I was... I had to dig deep to maintain the speed and power output. I was determined, maintaining the aero position was big as I had a smaller frontal area, better than if I was in the drops. What I had to do was roll my shoulders and elbows in, which was a big difference. One of the things that really helped me focus was the mile markers were every half mile apart this helped keep me motivated as the markers came up so fast making the miles go by faster. I finally, got to the turn off of Rte 70 and the hardest part of the ride the last 4 miles the first mile the road is nice but seems to always zap my legs, the last 3 miles the road is rough, bumpy and draining whatever you have left in your legs. The only thing that gets me thru at any speed is sheer will power! At point of my adventure I was happy to be coming to the finish with each turn of the pedal I was that much closer to home, winding my way thru the pot holes, dips and road damages for the entire last mile half at speed is a big challenge but keeps things interesting. Be safe out there, Enjoy Your Ride!
