Today's weather was great. Similar to the previous ride. Sunny, with a cool breeze. My intention, today, was to do the Willow Springs route + the Tour de Teh (SS) combined. I did just that and I came close to miscalculating my energy level. More on that later. My legs were fresh out the door. I had no problems warming up. I did moderate tempo to the end of OTR, and that warmed me up plenty. The winds were from the North West, but it was turbulent going on Highline. The winds changed directions when I reached half way on the outbound leg. I tried to keep the tempo high, and I was hoping I could put a good time down, but it wasn't to be so on this day. When I realized that I had bad wind conditions, I shut down high tempo and went to moderate. I was fresh when I reached the end, and I knew this was going to help for the remainder of the ride, as to keep some energy left in the legs. The return trip from Highline was moderate and into the wind. Very lilttle deviations in the tempo. I was doing about 90% when I reached the end of the return leg on Highline. The Banducci wall wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I think I calculated my efforts perfectly. No digs over the top, just kept the tempo nice and steady. The remainder of the climb was a bit faster tempo, as to be expected on a lesser gradient. Going through the farmlands proved to be what I had anticipated. Headwind on the way out, and tail (cross) on the way back. I mixed it up with some moderate and some higher tempo. Once I reached the base of the last climb, I did my best to stay on top of the pedals. For the most part, I succeeded. From there on was more of the same, moderate tempo, and a sprint to the left turn on route 202 and OTR. Ailments... My lower back was complaining just a bit, but it wasn't too bad. I had to stretch more often on the last half of the ride, and that helped a lot. My right knee had some soreness intermittent through out the ride. It was more of a discomfort than an ailment that required a lessening of the tempo. On the last climb, my upper quads, around the hips started to get sore. As for the miscalculation, I slightly misjudged my provisions. More specifically, I should have fed when I was on the summit of Banducci. When I reached the summit of the last climb, I fed my entire powerbar. I had enough fluids, without having to ration. Balance was so so. Sometimes I found myself having to really focus on keeping my bike square with the ground. Concentration was good for the most part. I always had my sights set on what was next, conserving and expending my energy accordingly. Gear is working well. No faults, but my bike continues to creek in the lower parts. The wheels are working great. I'm wanting to check the bottom bracket. It's really bugging me and I want to fix the problem ASAP. Other notes, I saw a deer crossing on the way back from Willow Springs. It looked like it was injured. It crossed from the left lane, then to the right lane. When she noticed she was in danger, she did an about face and hopped into the foliage for protection. I put my hand out to the cars to warn them. I'm pretty sure I got it on video.
