The ride covered 30.3 km with 730 m of ascent and 730 m of descent, set along a rolling, stepped profile defined by five structured climbs and linked descents across the Apokoronas hills.
Moving time totalled 1:52:05, with an ascent time of 1:05:31 and descent in 0:46:34. Gradients reached +24.8% on the steeper sections and –23.6% on the way down. Maximum speed recorded was 46.1 km/h, averaging 16.2 km/h across wet forest tracks, compacted earth, loose limestone, embedded rock, and short linking sections of village tarmac, with approximately 65% off-road. It was a winding, terrain-driven route — continuous effort with no extended recovery sections.
The ride rolled out on tarmac from Kokkino Chorio at 09:30, up hill toward Drapanos before climbing steadily toward Kefalas. The surface here was dry relative to the off-road sections to follow, but the week of rain was already visible in the verges and drainage channels. By 10:00 we arrived at Kefalas, the group formed at the Stone Man Junction, and from that point the route moved immediately onto dirt.
The first off-road section entered The Enchanted Forest. The ground here held water. The track surface consisted of compacted earth broken by multiple puddles and soft sections where tyres sank slightly under load. Progress was steady but controlled. Line choice was dictated by water depth and rut formation rather than speed. Several areas required reduced cadence to maintain traction through mud patches.
From the forest, the route transitioned onto the Dry Stone Wall Track. This section ran between established field boundaries, with traditional stone walls defining the line of travel. The surface was firmer than the forest but still affected by runoff. Loose stones had been displaced onto the riding line, and sections of shallow rutting required attention to wheel placement.
The climb sequence then built toward the Litsarda/Vamos Ridge. This section formed one of the longer continuous efforts of the ride. The track consisted of gravel over hard base, but with clear evidence of rain damage. Deep, rain-washed ruts ran along parts of the track, forcing riders to either commit to the rut line or hold a higher, less stable edge. The gradient increased progressively, with sustained effort required rather than short bursts.
Cresting the ridge, the route flattened briefly before beginning the approach into Vamos. The descent into the village allowed speed to build, but conditions remained variable. Damp sections persisted in shaded areas, and braking distances were extended.
The stop at Macky’s for coffee provided a clear break in the ride structure. Mid-morning conditions meant a steady presence of locals. Coffee was served immediately, followed by tsikoudia placed on the table without request. The atmosphere was consistent with a working kafeneio: continuous conversation, overlapping voices, and a steady turnover of people entering and leaving.
After coffee, the route resumed directly with climbing.
The ascent of Signal Tower Hill formed the next defined effort. This climb was structured and sustained, with gradients building through the middle section. The surface was mixed compacted earth and gravel, still holding moisture but offering improved traction compared to the forest sections.
From the top, the route dropped into the descent of Barsted Hill. This section required controlled braking due to loose surface over hard ground. Speed increased where the line opened, but irregularities in the surface limited sustained acceleration.
The route then transitioned immediately into Brian's climb. Shorter than the previous ascent but steeper in sections, this climb required concentrated effort. Gradients approached the upper range recorded for the ride, with traction remaining consistent but demanding.
Entry into the Roller Coaster via Προφήτης Ηλίας marked a shift in terrain rhythm. This section combined short, repeated undulations with mixed surface conditions. The terrain alternated between compact dirt and loose limestone, requiring continuous adjustment rather than sustained climbing or descending.
From there, the route joined the Aspro Track. The surface here showed clear signs of recent rain. Embedded stone, loose gravel, and sections of washed-out track combined to create a variable riding surface. The line was fast where firm, but inconsistent overall.
The final major effort came with the ascent of Four Hill Climb. This climb extended over approximately 1.5 km, with an average gradient of 7.7% and maximum pitches exceeding 18%. The surface consisted of compacted earth with loose overlay, and fatigue from earlier efforts made this section a sustained final push.
Cresting the climb, the route transitioned into the final descent sequence back toward Kokkino Chorio. The terrain here was familiar: terraced olive groves, mixed gravel and dirt, and short connecting sections of tarmac. Conditions had improved slightly as the ground began to dry, but caution remained necessary in shaded and low-lying areas.
The ride closed the loop at Kokkino Chorio with five defined climbs completed and a consistent pattern of effort maintained throughout.
The structure was clear: climb, transition, descend, repeat.
The terrain, affected by a full week of rain, dictated every aspect of the ride — speed, line, and effort. The route was taken as it presented itself, with no adjustment beyond what conditions required.
A complete loop through the Apokoronas hills under post-rain conditions, with defined climbs and continuous movement from start to finish.

Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
