I got up before 5am in my little internet cafe suite. It was only 6 hours of sleep but I value my early schedule so I got up anyway. It took me a while to mosey out of the room but I got there eventually. First stop wa Kojima Jeans Street, kind of the reason I went over here in the first place.
Of course nothing was open yet, but the jeans hanging above the street were cool. I only really rode through and then kept going to Kurashiki, another place I was recommended by Hiro. It took me a while to get there and at one point felt like I kept racing this school kid on a bike (I won 😎), the roads were wide main roads usually with a path to go on, but sometimes when there were no paths it was a little scary being on the road with all the cars.
The old town quarter of Kurashiki was very beautiful, I walked through it for about 5 minutes after getting brekky at Joyfull. It felt like I was ticking it off to be honest. I then headed east to Okayama city, where I got a coffee and chatted to the cafe owner. He used to work in construction, but now that his kids are older he has the freedom to switch careers and now runs this little cafe. The coffee was amazing and he was playing Anderson .Paak the whole time which was a plus. He said I have to make sure I see the Okayama castle, so I went there next.
The castle was cool, it was black instead of white. I briskly walked through and took some videos. Once again, it felt like I was just ticking it off.
Honestly, doing any sight seeing usually feels like ticking a box for me, which I don't enjoy. Some days it can be interesting, but more often than not I feel like I'm convincing myself that I'm interested. When I'm with people who are very interested, that can sometimes rub off on me. But it really makes me question why I even travel, if I don't seem to want to go do anything at the places I visit.
I left Okayama at midday and got into a flow state. At one point a truck absolutely roared past me so close I audibly yelled. I was listening to bear safety videos today and I've come to a conclusion. I would rather go into the countryside and cycle through bear territory than alongside one lane highways with trucks. For him to get that close there couldn't have been any good intentions. Either he had bad intentions and didn't care for my wellbeing, or he had no intentions and didn't know he was that close. At least bears only want food, and are 99% of the time completely disinterested in humans. A truck driver on the other hand could kill me in a second because they are playing Pachinko slots on their phone. Anyway...
I reminded myself to stop listening to thing in my earphones when I caught myself cycling back the way I just was for 5 minutes post convenience store stop. The rain started coming in but I made it to Gusto for dinner around 5pm. I'd almost done 100km. I spent an hour and a half there pigging out then made my way to the campsite probably a little too late than I should have. I got my tent set up right before it went dark, and right before the rain started pouring in again. I'm in front of a beach where the waves will hopefully rock me to sleep.
Maybe not the most positive day review, but to be honest most of it was pretty dull, not good nor bad, just there. At one point I did use a vending machine with drinks I'd never seen before though. I got the "Japan Soda" which was basically just a more carbonated Ramune. That was cool!
