The ride covered 30.0 km with 721 m of ascent and 726 m of descent, set along a rolling ridge-and-valley profile characterised by repeated short climbs and descents. Moving time totalled 2:08:29, with an ascent time of 1:11:06 and descent in 0:54:55. Gradients reached +25.1% on the steeper sections and –20.3% on the way down. Maximum speed recorded was 38.2 km/h, averaging 14.0 km/h across agricultural tracks, loose limestone, compact gravel, farm roads, rocky double-track and minor tarmac lanes, with 80% off-road. It was a stepped route, repeatedly descending into shallow valleys before climbing back onto successive ridges. The distance was modest; the climbing was not.

Part 8 of The Ground Decides series examines one of the most fundamental realities of movement through terrain.
Distance is often the least important measure.
The real cost lies in repeatedly gaining and losing height.
From Kokkino Chorio the route immediately began dropping from the higher ground of the village towards the lower ridges and valleys that characterise this part of the Apokoronas. Looking at the ride profile afterwards, the route resembles a series of waves rather than a single climb or descent. Every valley crossed demanded another ascent. Every ridge gained was eventually surrendered to the next drainage line.
The result was over seven hundred metres of climbing from a ride whose highest point reached only 173 metres above sea level.
That is the arithmetic of terrain.
Early in the ride I stopped beside an agricultural track running parallel to the modern E75. It was one of those moments where the landscape illustrates an argument more effectively than words.
The old track and the modern highway occupy almost the same corridor. One is compacted earth and gravel, the other engineered tarmac supported by modern earthworks. Yet both are solving exactly the same problem.
How do you move efficiently through broken ground?
The answer is not determined by technology. It is determined by terrain.
The old route follows the contour of the hillside, accepting a longer distance in exchange for manageable gradients. The highway engineers, despite having access to machinery and modern surveying techniques, selected essentially the same corridor because the landscape offers only a limited number of efficient routes through it.
Different generations. Different vehicles. The same ground.
The climb still decides.
The ride continued across a mixture of farm tracks, agricultural roads and rough double-track. Some sections were fast and flowing. Others demanded concentration as loose limestone and scattered stone reduced traction and forced careful line selection. On steeper ramps momentum became important. Lose it and the climb immediately became harder. Maintain it and the gradient remained manageable.
This is one of the reasons climbs exert such influence over movement.
On level ground there are often many options.
On a climb the choices narrow.
The gradient determines speed. The surface determines traction. The rider adapts.
The White Mountains dominated the southern horizon throughout much of the ride. Fresh cloud shadows drifted across the lower hills while the higher limestone peaks stood bright in the distance. They provided a useful reminder of scale. The mountains themselves were not today's objective. Instead, the ride explored the lower ridges and folds that lie between the coast and the mountains.
It is easy to overlook this terrain because it lacks the drama of the Lefka Ori. Yet historically it has always mattered.
Farmers, shepherds, travellers and soldiers have all faced the same challenge. The shortest route across the map is rarely the easiest route on the ground. Progress is determined by ridges, valleys, watercourses and gradients. Movement becomes a negotiation with the landscape.
The ride profile demonstrates this clearly.
None of the six principal climbs were individually exceptional. The longest measured only 1.5 kilometres. Yet together they accumulated more than seven hundred metres of ascent. The final climb was the most significant. At 1.5 kilometres long with gradients reaching 18.8%, it arrived after almost 28 kilometres of riding. By then the earlier climbs had already extracted their cost. What appeared manageable in isolation felt very different when encountered at the end of the route.
That is another lesson of climbing.
The climb never exists alone.
Every climb is influenced by those that came before it.
Fatigue accumulates. Momentum is lost and regained. The terrain keeps its own account.
Looking again at the wartime survey maps of the area afterwards, many of the same corridors of movement can still be identified. Tracks, roads and paths often occupy alignments that remain recognisable today. The details have changed, but the underlying logic has not. The surveyors of 1941, like modern cyclists, were recording movement through terrain constrained by the same ridges and valleys.
The ground decides where movement is possible.
The climb decides what it costs.
That was the lesson of today's ride.
Not a mountain ascent. Not a single defining obstacle.
Simply six separate climbs, each demanding payment in effort, each contributing to the total.
Thirty kilometres on the odometer.
More than seven hundred metres of climbing.
A useful reminder that in broken country, distance measures travel.
The climb measures work.
