I woke up at 4am to rain absolutely belting my tent. When it rains this hard, basically the entire floor of my tent is wet, but I'm still dry on top of my mat. I'm just happy water doesn't drip on me from the ceiling (although there was one drop that made it through onto my forehead). I packed up everything into my bad and ran from the tent to the inside kitchen area. I then went back over to the tent to take out the pegs and carry it over so I could pack it up. I had a couple hours till the ferry, but I knew I still couldn't just laze around.
I decided to ride over to the ferry early, which was a good move. After my breakfast at Lawson, I went to the ferry dock pretty wet. Before I knew it I was on the ferry and sitting down on the floor. The standard tickets didn't have seats, only carpeted floor space where everyone takes off their shoes and lies down. Very Japanese!
An older gentleman came up to me to chat. He must've noticed I came on a bicycle because he led with that. He is travelling to Hokkaido in his car but has a bicycle inside, that he will do little trips on. He's been to Hokkaido 8 times already and gave me some recommendations. He also played rugby and has been to New Zealand many times before.
Once the ferry arrived in Hakodate, it was still raining but not bucketing. I made my way south first to get a nice coffee and wait out the rain for another hour. I then went to a MEGA Don Quijote, which was very over stimulating. I went there to get a new camera cover for my phone since I'd already cracked mine yesterday after having it for a week.
Then I FINALLY set off. It was a mostly highway ride, it took a little to get out of the city and then once I was out it was pretty quick to get to Onuma. First thing I did was wash all of my clothes and have my linner (lunch/dinner). Onuma has a big lake that is a popular tourist spot. There was a motorbike event at the paid campsite in town, lots of Harleys, Triumphs and other brands. I walked around the lake bridges and then headed to my campsite, a free one on the east side of the lake.
But, the campground was closed! The sign said there was a brown bear sighting at the campsite 10 days prior, and so they had closed it until further notice. It's a shame because it looked really beautiful, camping right by the lake. So I called the paid campground I'd seen earlier, and although they had just finished reception hours they said I could come stay there. It was ¥2000 for the night and ¥600 to use the shower (so about $25). It was basically just a plot of grass in the town, with lots of families there who camp to cook over a fire and let their kids run around. It's not really worth the money, but it's worth being safer from brown bears. The shower was a nice addition too.
