Today was the first ride of the new year! I felt horrible in the morning. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling nauseous. I had to ice my sides to keep things under control. I got up in the morning, had breakfast and took a nap. I was still a bit nauseous when I got up, but I really wanted to go for a ride. I decided to go for it. Somewhat late, nonetheless. My quads have been sore for the past day. No clue why. I haven't been doing anything out of the ordinary. Fortunately, it didn't make a difference. I headed out. Wearing the full winter kit, with knee warmers. I was comfortable for most of the ride. I made my way up OTR. reaching the summit in average time. The Banducci wall wasn't much fun. Lot's of traffic mitigation. I was near max, over the top. I made my way to the summit, minding the traffic from behind. The shoulders had plowed snow, so very little room to let traffic by. I reached the summit and decided to take some photos. I then headed downhill. No tucking today. There were too many blind turns with patches of ice and salt. I reached the base and headed to SS. Keeping the tempo modest. I made my way around the back side. I must have been off by about 5 to 10 minutes. I kept that in mind for the next checkpoint, Boss Hogs. I made my way through SS and back on Banducci. The tailwind was a welcome assistance. The miles went quick. I tried to keep my mind focused. Doing numbers in my mind. I reached Boss Hogs. I think I was off by about 2 minutes or so, from the tunnel. So, I did good time on that section. Before that, I stopped to swap out camera batteries on my way to SS. I was calculating the next battery change. Somewhere near the climb of CVR. I made my way to the climb and stopped to check the battery charge. It was 4 to 10% remaining. So, I decided to let it run to depletion. It stopped just as I was about to reach the summit. At this point, my right calf started to cramp just a bit. I held back and stretched when I could. It didn't escalate, but lingered. From the false flat of CVR, I made my way to Route 202. Doing traffic mitigation. OTR was mostly fun and games, but I was alert from the run off water and traffic. I made my way up Mariposa. No digs. The right leg was still cramping ever so slightly. From there, it was mostly fun and games. Concentration was good. Ailments. Some right calf cramping. I went in feeling Nauseous, but it never escalated. Probably got better as I was riding. My quads were sore before the ride. But, it wasn't present for most of the ride. Other notes, no other cyclists today.
