Golly, I hate it when almost done posting a ride description & I tap some button inadvertently and it disappears & has to be done, which requires memory & thought on a Sunday. Found a penny coming out of the convenience store after 1 last pit stop before riding. Tails up. So I waited for the "eventfulness" from last Sunday to continue. But it was mostly an uneventful ride, till the last 4-5 miles. Decided on a change of scenery, got cuesheets from Ride With GPS for past Tour de Blands, decided on the 55-miler, b/c I sure didn't want to do 66.6 miles, & even though I got a decent start time, I think too hot for 73- or 100-mile options, (maybe in September before M2C) Humming along up to & down the South side of Big Walker. Drank minimally. Needed no refills @ Big Walker Lookout store. THEN got thirsty, & my 4 bottles were running low by the time I was headed west on 42, & no open stores anywhere till back to the Kangaroo store. Rt. 738 over Little Walker Mtn is ABYSSMALLY (sorry if misspelled or if it is not even a word) HORRID! Hardly anyone uses it, moss growing from cracks, now I know why. So rough & bumpy. More hairpins than Holly has. And Garmin elevation data to gage & pace the climb was going DOWN as I climbed. No satellite signals in Pulaski County? Musings of a veterinarian on a boondocks bike ride: do flies & maggots die when get down far enough to ingest venom from a dead huge copperhead?; do calves nursing from cows eating buttercups w/ forage have sweeter breath?; if I drop a raisin or 2 while snacking @ roadside, & foxes eat them, will it fry their kidneys like some dogs (Aesop had a fable about foxes & grapes) [red fox pup I saw was too fast for pic]. Then @ the end, the aforementioned penny caught me even though I WAS almost out of water. Grade school math came to mind. If a fast developing line of big thunderstorms setting off weather warnings is 8-10 miles W of my truck & moving E @ 30mph, & a bicyclist is traveling W @ 12mph (variably d/t grade) from 5 miles E of said SUV, will the cyclist be able to stay dry? That would be a NO. No hail, but that gust front was fierce & straight @ me. No salt on helmet straps now, though. Did cool things off, since there was no shelter, and I couldn't have seen it anyway. Was going to go visit the cat that lives down @ the end of the 2-mile dead end of Mainstream in Bland, that I did as a prefix to add 6 miles to the ride & maybe get a metric Gran Fondo, but I figured the rain probably drove him in for shelter off the road that he "owns".
